NYT/AP: La. Senate Sends Abortion Ban to Gov. Blanco (expected to sign)
La. Senate Sends Abortion Ban to Gov.
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 5, 2006

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco was expected to sign a strict abortion ban into law after the Senate gave the measure final legislative approval Monday.

The bill would ban nearly all abortions in Louisiana, though it could take effect only under two circumstances: if the U.S. Constitution is amended to allow states to ban abortion, or if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling.

Doctors found guilty of performing abortions would face as many as 10 years in prison and fines as high as $100,000.

Originally, the bill would have allowed abortions only to save the life of the mother, with no exceptions in cases of rape or incest. The House added a provision to allow abortions when the mother's health faces permanent harm....

***

The bill is similar to a South Dakota law passed this year that is expected to land before the Supreme Court.

14. She has a "D" behind her name. that's about it
I voted for her because her opponent was Bobby Jindal, a GIANT bushbot who had Cheney and Bush doing robocalls urging everyone to vote for him.

She's pretty useless.

17. I have to agree with you
I regret the day I voted for her, but there was no other choice. What the heck is wrong with people in Louisiana? Here's my prediction...if Jindal runs against her next year, he'll win. It won't even be close. Even the racists that didn't vote for him last time because he wasn't the "right" color in their warped minds will vote for him, just to get her out of office. She carried Iberia Parish last time, but she won't again.

10. traitor to humanity, I'd say

But of course, specifically, traitor to her sex.

There are times when even moi is tempted to use the word we've fought so long and hard against people at DU applying to women. But even better: PIG. There's really no other way to describe anyone who supports, let alone passes, let alone endorses by the authority of her office, vicious misogynist filth like this.

7. maybe she thinks she is politically safe? given the conditions?

11. Maybe she does. So ? ...

Feeling politically safe would only explain her actions if she felt politically safe doing what she wanted to do.

This leaves open the question of why anyone would want to do this.

The only answer that comes to my mind is: s/he is woman-hating scum.

13. Far from it
After Katrina, the Republicans that voted for her, and those that didn't vote for (or just didn't vote) for the Republican candidate she ran against(Bobby Jindal... because he was too "dark" and "foreign"), were ready to have her recalled. They even got a petition started for a recall election. She is up for re-election next year, and word is that Jindal will be challenging her again. Right now, her approval rating is around 30% - 35%. The Democratic Agricultural Commissioner even said that he wanted John Breaux to run for Governor next year because Blanco had become a useless joke. She needs the Republican vote to get reelected. Some more background on her- She didn't support Kerry in the last election. She said that she couldn't bring him around the sate to visit with people that would traditionally support the Democratic candidate because he was "too liberal" for most people here. She crammed the CEO of the Shaw group down the state party's throat as party chairman, even though he had just switched from a Republican to a Democrat the year before. (I guess the fact that he was her biggest political contributor had nothing to do with it). He ended up resigning the party chairmanship just after the start of the Iraq war, because Shaw is contracting with the DOD big time and he had to devote more time to his company. I hate this woman...I truly do. I am ashamed to live here right now.

9. How valued a member of society I feel
to know that the life of a clump of cells is vastly more important than mine. What a joy, to live in a society which removes making important decisions regarding my body and health from me, and places those decisions in the hands of white conservative men. Isn't it thrilling, my sisters, to know that we don't have to worry our pretty little minds about such trivial things as our own feelings, our finances, our ability to support another child, but can instead let those decisions be made by people who will turn their backs on us and our child, once that child clears the birth canal.

The only thing they demand from us is the ability to make a decision for ourselves. As for the rest of that child's life, well, that's OUR responsibility, we should have kept our legs crossed, whether or not we were raped, or our birth control failed, or whatever else led us to this pregnancy. Oh, what's that? If we are forced to give birth, we should also expect the ones who took the choice from us to also lend a hand in that child's future? Absurd.

Too bad if our marriage is falling apart, or we already have more children than we can afford, or we find that the child will likely not live to adulthood, due to some gross abnormality...the rights of the fetus trump ours any time, any place. Just don't expect their making the decision for us also mean that they will share some of the obligations that come with having a child. And yes....:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

FYI...I turned 63 today. Being pregnant is no longer an issue for me, but it is for millions of other women, and I am ready to fight for their right to choose. It belongs to them, and nobody else.

15. Mary Landrieu is firmly pro choice
In the last election, she slapped down her bushbot opponent when asked about abortion in the debate. Although the bushbot opponent was on record as being antichoice, when Landrieu said it was a decision among a woman, her doctor and her god, her opponent lamely mouthed the exact same answer when asked that question!!

24. More on this...
http://www.dailycomet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060601/APN/606011010

"The bill could only go into effect if the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision is overturned.

"I anticipate signing that bill. It's got a safety measure for extreme situations for the life of the mother and some other health issues," Blanco said in an interview with The Associated Press.

She said she believed an exception for rape and incest victims to get an abortion, a proposal rejected by both the House and Senate, would have "been reasonable," but she said she wouldn't reject the bill for that reason.

"The Legislature has spoken," Blanco said."

25. No rape or incest exception and she still won't veto it?
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 10:35 PM by Rose Siding
Does the LA gov have a veto? If she does, then when the "legislature has spoken" BADLY, it would be her duty to veto the bill.

Twelve year olds could have to bear rapists' children, but she won't reject the bill "for that reason".

Just too painful.

This is like Lieberman waiting to see if Clarence Thomas has enough votes before he casts his. Hand washing. Cowardice or unbelievable cruelty.

28. It's another example of a Democrat supporting the..
perception of what is popular. If you frame being pro-choice as protecting a mother's options only, most of the public agrees with us.
