Gay marriage ban wins big in Alabama
6/6/2006, 11:29 p.m. CT
By JAY REEVES
The Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Alabama on Tuesday, granting what conservative supporters called additional protection for traditional families in a state where homosexual unions already are illegal.
With 86 percent of 3,240 precincts reporting, "yes" votes to approve the measure were leading "no" votes 641,113-146,553, or 81 percent to 19 percent.

Returns showed the amendment passing by wide margins in both rural and urban areas, north and south. Joseph Rembert Jr. said he didn't go to the polls solely because of the amendment, but he was glad it was on the ballot.

"I'm all man, so I ain't got nothing to do with that," said Rembert, 32, of Montgomery. "I go by what the Bible says — man and woman." But Gwen Carmack of Mobile said it's not the business of government to decide who can get married and who can't.

"I just prefer the state not do that. It's an individual choice," said Carmack, 56, a project manager in health care software.

No, if you were "all man," you wouldn't be threatened by two men or two women in love with each other, dumbass.

38. we're talking about gay marriage, I think
and no, it is not legal in the District of Columbia, because the Congress refuses to authorize DC to spend the money to count the votes. SAme reason that medical marijuana is illegal in DC. Congress refuses to let us count our own votes. But still, I think I'll take the 91% Democrat, 5% Green and 4% Republican (oh yes, there are more registered GREENS in DC than Republicans) over the 81% Homophobic Bigots of Alabama.

Let me remind you: Alabama = 81% Homophobic Bigots. Sounds like vacationland to me!

that if DC had a referendum on banning gay marriage, it would pass easily.

Black voters in Alabama heavily supported the ban. There's no reason to think black voters in the District wouldn't also voted for it.

I am sometimes irritated by others' comments about how "racist" everyone in the South is as I grew up down there. Nonetheless, in this case, AL really deserves the criticism it gets, since it voted for the ban by such HUGE margins. We all know that SOME people down there are great, but MOST of them are a bunch of REDNECK, IGNORANT YAHOOS who could have played extras in the film "Deliverance" without having to make any effort to act. I am an equal-opportunity type of person, and I'll say the same thing for the shit hole state I grew up in, the "land of opportunity", Arkansas.

passed by very large margins in every single one of Alabama's black-majority counties.

Black Democratic voters -- who delivered those same counties to Gore and Kerry -- heavily supported the ban.

I know that not everybody there deserves to be lumped in the same "cess pool," but I would say that about 90 percent of the white population of alabama are ignorant, backwoods, racist homophobes with poor personal grooming habits. If you disagree, you obviously are not an out homosexual in that state.

Moving out of Alabama is the best decision I have ever made in my life.

more or less. I was asked once by the RA on my floor (this in 1987 by the way) that I should have checked the box requesting a white roommate. First of all, the fact that they even allow you to choose the race of your roommate sucks big time. It is one thing to room with a specific person (a friend from high school, for example), otherwise it should be an opportunity to get to know someone else, perhaps of another race or nationality.

My first roommate was a first class right wing asshole and bigot.

worked for Seigelman. What the hell happened to him?? He used to smoke pot along with everyone else - but he was a good and decent humane Democrat. He was a looker with charisma - and had such a bright future ahead of him. Corruption charges? Man I just can not picture that. Also, he seems stupid to run with that hanging over him. If anyone should move to another state and try there - it is Don.

Last poll I saw, more people disliked Bush than liked him. How's that going?

P.S. If you have to have a republican, you're lucky to have one who seems to care about the less fortunate !

22. Been to Alabama once...
Birmingham, where my ex lives. I had driven my son there from Houston to spend the summer with his dad (my son was 7 at the time). The three of us decided to go to a movie. I was very dark-skinned because I stayed at the beach every weekend back then, and have dark hair and eyes. I have a very mediterranean look, and have been mistaken for everything from Native American to Creole.

So, we are walking to the movie theater, and people are outright, hostilely STARING at us. My son looks like me, except he has his father's blond, curly hair and hazel eyes. They thought we were an interracial couple! It was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life.

I am definitely not surprised at the outcome of the vote yesterday there.

27. Let's run some numbers here
50states.com says Alabama contains 4.5 million people and 25 percent of them are under the age of 18--hence, about 3.375 million people can vote.

Of these 3.375 million people, about 650,000 of them (nineteen percent) voted to weld hate into the Alabama constitution. It is very possible that every person whose marriage will be destroyed if gay people can get married too went to the polls. I figure the 146,553 who voted no were mostly gay, and I'm not being derogatory here. For what is essentially a single-issue election, only the people who have a personal stake in the outcome tend to go to the polls--which is why the turnout at primary time routinely sucks. If there are 140,000 gays in Alabama, all of them would have turned out to vote no. Some hetero liberals came out too...but for most people, this election wasn't a huge deal. Gay marriage is already illegal in Alabama and would have remained so even if this referendum would have failed. So fuck it, man, why bother, it's not like anything's gonna change.

The real shocker is that they put this on the ballot in the spring. If I was a Repuke, I'd have wanted it on the November ballot, to motivate the right wing to come to the polls...oh, and while you're here putting the gay marriage ban into the constitution could you do us a favor and vote a straight Republican ticket too? The fuckers threw away their best wedge. This may be the worst campaign strategy since Bob Shrum decided to let John Kerry be photographed in a cleanroom suit.

you asked! my old friend who I wanted to be with so bad said that "God doesn't want us to be this way", so yes, I think too many of them take the leviticus to heart and fear for their souls, and ignore luke 17:34 and Jesus' never mentioning gays in a bad light, and instead go by what the social behavior of society tells them - that they shouldn't be gay and the bible tells them so.

as a Christian it broke my heart to hear that comment from him, and I'll never be the same, but I'm sure of who I am in Christ - and I pray for these sick bastards to wake up and stop being so hateful before they pass on in this life, which isn't very long, and then face God about their hatred or worse (assault or murder of gays/trans)

31. The South bashing is ludycriss..
oops, I done forgot all my fancy book learning and done gone and misselt that ther hard word. Get real. What do you expect Alabama to do? It was on a stupid primary ballot, not in November. I hate Boston. I hate their weather and their accents and their smug Yankee assholedness. I hate their food, the ridiculous broad As and their slumlike general housing. But I just consider they are the worst of all yankees (except for Michiganders) and that they weren't raised right.
I hate the Red Sox and the Patriots, too. Hockey is a joke. I am old enough to remember the "good Democratic" housewives cursing like fishwives at little children when Boston instituted bussing for racial balance.
Yep, I find 'em all disgusting as a group, but I don't go around making blanket statements about them.
Oh, by the way, everything in Alabama south of the Tennessee River could be cut off and I wouldn't care. That would make Huntsville that much closer to the Gulf!
But seriously, can't you get over your sectionalism? This is supposed to be the Democratic Party's Progressive at Discussion here, not some sort of Southbash fiesta.
Morons exist everywhere. Half of what has been written in this thread is ridiculous. As for Birminghamians thinking someone vaguely looking Mediterranean and having blond-haired blue-eyed kids in tow being stared at: how self-centered can one get? Maybe they were looking at your kids as being cute or your necklace or not at you at all. I am so damned dark that people first address me in Spanish in NYC and assume I am Creole in NOLA. Just Black Irish and Italian. My dad had blond hair and blue eyes, and noone ever thought twice about it...

Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 04:17 PM by Zhade
If the party stands for anything, should it not stand for equal treatment under the law?

Fact is, a lot of the South is racist and homophobic. I know, I grew up there. This ban proves it in part, and that Dems - including blacks, who should know better! - can vote to ban equality is very upsetting.

But what do I know, I'm just a queer taxpaying citizen, why should I expect alleged liberals to support equality?

47. We were lucky to get it on the primary ballot
rather than in November for the general. I've talked with several of
our more progressive state legislators and they all concurred that
there was no way to stop the repukes from raising this issue, so they
basically "beat them to the punch" and were able to put it on the primary
ballot. When I asked them all if there were not more important issues
to deal with, I was told that while they agreed with me, the issue
was important to too many Alabamians. I was actually lectured for telling one of our senators that this bill was wrong, that intolerance should never be promoted. I was told that by talking against Amendment 1
at a candidates' rally I could hurt Democrats and I should keep my opinion to myself.

Stop acting like conservatives and lumping everyone into one category.

However, 80 to 19 in Alabama means a whole fucking bunch of democrats voted for this - here's another glass of whiskey.

56. Attention Jerks Everywhere
I'm a lifelong (almost) resident of Alabama. And I have all of my teeth, except for my wisdom teeth.

And I have never fucked my mother, my sister, my brother, my cousin, my father, or my cow.

Nor, to my knowledge, has anyone that I know.

I have, or have had, friends that are white, black, Asian, Latino, Arab, straight, gay, bisexual, and transgendered. (Okay I lied about that last one. I don't think I've ever met a transgendered person.)

Whites and blacks down here get along just fine, for the overwhelming part. Not like in New York where they sodomize black immigrants with plungers. And not like in Los Angeles where they shoot unarmed black men umpteen times. Things were different in the past, but that is the past. We have moved past that stuff. Sure there are still racists down here. But where do racists not exist?

Society is integrated down here. Schools are integrated. Neighborhoods are integrated. An increasing number of families are integrated.

Not that everything is good. Schools are locally funded through property taxes, which is bad for the poorest areas of the state (which also happen to be the blackest areas). This is something that needs to be addressed.

I voted against the stupid amendment. But you have to admit that the idea of same-sex marriage is a radical idea for a lot of people, wherever they live.

And getting up on some high-horse and making malicious, ignorant comments isn't helping anything. Does a certain poster really want to blockade my state, and starve us all to death?

I like Howard Dean's "50 State Strategy." But a lot of people in this thread seem not to. And some people in this thread seem to endorse something that I thought was anathema to a liberal mindset -- BIGOTRY.

So bask in your self-perceived superiority all you want. But rest assured it's not helping a goddamn thing.

59. Well said syrinx.
It looks like all of us need to view poll results like these as markers of what the "real America" - not just the "real Alabama" or "real South" is actually like. Who knows what the results would have been if a referendum occurred on this issue in California? In New York?

This is a crystal clear example of what happens when human rights of any kind are subjected to a popular vote. It ain't pretty. But by no means, does all the prejudice in this country live in the South.

60. Right, bigotry and racism exist everywhere, and they always have.
Racism Comes Home:
The Howard Beach Case
By REED ALBERGOTTI, THOMAS ZAMBITO, MARSHA SCHRAGER
AND JOHN ROFE
On Dec. 20, 1986, racial tension in Howard Beach exploded into headlines when a gang of white youths brutally beat three black men who had stumbled into the neighborhood, chasing one of the three to his death when he was hit by a car crossing the Shore Parkway.
http://www.queenstribune.com/anniversary2003/howardbeach.htm

… perhaps the darkest secret of the Wallowa country of northeast Oregon, usually known for the tragic Nez Perce War of 1877, resurfaced recently with the discovery of the long-lost court records describing what some have called, "the crime of the century" and "one of the bloodiest and most spectacular mass murders in American history." This crime, which today remains marked by controversy, was the ambush, murder, and mutilation of Chinese gold miners in the 1887 Snake River massacre.

http://www.eoni.com/~highberg/snake_river.html

There's always the hope that maybe one day, racism and bigotry won't be around. Idealistic, yes.

Is EVERYONE in the South a hatefilled racist jackass? Of course not. Does the South coddle and protect its racists and homphobes in a way that seems repulsive to members of other more progressive communites? You f**king bet it does.

62. I have to agree
It's that kind of arrogance that has put the National Dem party in the 'out of power' position it is in now.

Some of the so called 'red states' are giving progressives a tougher road than the so called 'blue states' but that's just part of the diversity of this nation.

Yes this amendment is abhorrent but we can should no more dictate to the people of Alabama than we should to the people of Iraq. Let's help to change things and protect our fellow citizens and human beings who happen to be homosexual and live there but let's not forget that it is the people of Alabama that must ultimately lead the way. Just like so many of us complain about the neo-con misguided policies of enforcing their idea of American values and freedom on other countries we should not take the same attitude we condemn internationally to wards people within our own nation.

Again I find the vote of the people of Alabama distressing to say the least, this is in no way an acceptance of this attitude or to say we should not condemn it but lets not turn that into a blanket condemnation of the people of Alabama or turn ourselves into a version of the 'neo-cons'. It will only push people further away from progressive ideas.

So.. we're supposed to just ignore that fact that you live in a racist, bigoted, state because you are not? Or because you have friends of other races? My neice lived in North Carolina for a brief period. She and her boyfriend left pretty quickly... seems that Cuban boys are not real welcome in small towns of North Carolina.. they were followed, called names, and harrassed, the entire time. Racism and bigotry, sorry to say, DO exist in high concentrations in the South. While I don't think people should bash everyone in a State for that fact.. neither should they look the other way and accept institutionalized racism and bigotry. Many states down that way lean toward pre-civil rights era days..

Not real sure what you mean by that.

I don't have the figures, but I bet if you took the number of black elected officials from different areas of the country, and even if you adjusted them for population percentages, the South would have more elected black officials than any other area of the country. Just a hunch.

101. Why should Christianity impose its anti-Semitic values on Judaism?
Religious liberty means liberty for all, not for one denomination to impose its sectarian views on everyone else.

(T)he Marriage Protection Amendment is clearly an issue of religious liberty: Religions should have the right to decide which partnerships they will and will not sanctify in their houses of worship, yet the government should treat all couples equally in its allocation of civil benefits.

<snip>

Jewish Values and Equal Rights for Gays and Lesbians

The two most often cited Biblical texts concerning homosexuality are both found in the book of Leviticus, where they are in the context of a larger section directing sexual behavior. First, it is written: “Do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman; it is an abhorrence.” (Leviticus 18:22) The second citation is from Leviticus 20:13, where we read that “If a man lies with a male as one lies with a woman, the two of them have done an abhorrent thing; they shall be put to death-their blood guilt is upon them.” Yet, these individual verses exist in a broader tradition that mandate equality, tolerance, and justice. We are guided by the very basic belief that all human beings are created b’tzelem Elohim (in the Divine image), as it says in Genesis 1:27, “And God created humans in God's own image, in the image of God, God created them; male and female God created them.” Reform Judaism also opposes discrimination against gays and lesbians based on our contemporary understanding of the nature of sexual orientation. A Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) responsum states: “We hold that homosexuality is no longer (an abomination); it is not a mental illness or a social deviancy; it is not a perversion of the natural order. Homosexuality is not a choice or a preference; it is not something that one decides to do or to abstain from doing. It is, like heterosexuality, the way one is…As such it makes no sense on religious or moral grounds to differentiate between people on the basis of sexual orientation.”

Reform Movement Policy on Same-Sex Marriage

The Reform Movement has a long and proud tradition of fighting for equal rights for gays and lesbians. This tradition dates back to 1965, when the Women of Reform Judaism passed a resolution calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality. In 1997, the Union for Reform Judaism passed a resolution endorsing “legal recognition of monogamous domestic gay and lesbian relationships” and vowing to “support secular efforts to promote legislation which would provide through civil marriage equal opportunity for gay men and lesbians.” A 1996 resolution approved by the CCAR supports “the right of gay and lesbian couples to share fully and equally in the rights of civil marriage,” and officially states the Reform rabbinate’s opposition to “governmental efforts to ban gay and lesbian marriage.”

In March 2000, the CCAR passed a landmark resolution stating that “the relationship of a Jewish, same gender couple is worthy of affirmation through appropriate Jewish ritual.” The CCAR resolution officially supports Reform rabbis who choose to officiate at religious same-sex wedding ceremonies. Rabbi Eric Yoffie, the president of the Union for Reform Judaism, noted the significance of this resolution: “For the first time in history, a major rabbinical body has affirmed the Jewish validity of committed, same-gender relationships.”
