(Canada) Suspects linked to Baghdad militant
The arrest of six Mississauga men for allegedly conspiring to blow up the Parliament buildings and the Toronto Stock Exchange is the latest stop on a complex web of terror that connects back to the world's most wanted man, international investigators are saying.

Investigators say the arrests of the Mississauga men are linked to an intricate terror network spreading from the back streets of Baghdad through cells of young Islamic militants living in European capitals.

The arrest of 17 suspects, many of them teenagers, picked up in Mississauga and across the GTA during a counter-terrorism sweep on the weekend, is said to be the latest stage in dismantling a terrorist network that's linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

For nine months, Operation Mazhar's police and intelligence agents in eight countries have monitored emails and intercepted phone calls, leading so far to the arrest of 30 men.

1. We fight them OVER THERE....
....so we don't have to fight them here!

Wow...Junior was lying when he said that. Now...his false statements have come back to haunt him--in the form of truth. They ARE coming HERE, when in reality---they didn't have any plans to come HERE until we went over THERE. So now...we're fighting them over there AND over here.

That's some crazy shiznit.

6. Actually, polls show
that most Americans think Canada is in the Europe or the Middle East anyway.

4. Heh, "linked"
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 12:47 PM by Posteritatis
I love that term. I bet you I'm "linked" to Osama somehow, or at least to some high-profile group of nasties out there.

While I believe that, if someone actually wanted to make use of connections like that, they could connect with some of the aforementioned nasties, that doesn't mean the abiliy to was there, even if the intent may well have been. (As stated in other threads about these guys, they were idiots as much as Dire Threats.)

Well, either that or the investigators have decided Indymedia is an intricate terror network or something, which is entirely possible. (Though I disagree and consider it merely an intricate goddamnedannoying network..)

(ed: me grammar am good yes)

9. here we fucking go again

Thanks to everyone at DU who has shown such concern for the safety and well-being of Canadians in the last few days.

Oh. You might not have sensed the sarcasm there. My apologies.

But hey, I'm just so pleased that we've been able to provide you with so many hours of fun.

10. Harper is a danger to Canada
If Canadians are so worried about their safety, why did so many of them vote for a Bush-puppy? This story has no evidence to support it yet. After all the lies we've been told in the past, why souldn't we be sceptical?

12. ignorance and arrogance are dangers to Canada
If Canadians are so worried about their safety, why did so many of them vote for a Bush-puppy?

Pop quiz: what percentage of the Candian electorate voted for Harper?

For extra credit: compare and contrast with the percentage of the USAmerican electorate that voted for Bush.

For actual respect, write a brief explanation of why the percentage of the population that shifted its votes to the Conservatives in 2006 actually did so. If you really don't know, feel free to ask sincerely.

This story has no evidence to support it yet.

Did you want to get a clue about why?

Here's one great big reason.

In Canada, we respect the right of an accused person to a fair trial, and we protect the exercise of that right. That means that our police and prosecutors do not go around blatting everything they know about a case to the press, in order not to pollute the jury pool. Often, details about charges are not released to the public until several months after the charges are laid. We're funny that way.

Here's another possible reason: investigation is ongoing. Forgive my stupid colonial self, but if there is a possibility that there are further crimes being planned, I'd kind of like to have my police/intelligence services have the opportunity to keep investigating and prevent them if possible. You might have read about how this particular set of arrests happened rather precipitously, and earlier than was apparently planned. I'm rather more interested in assurance that the job is done than in satisfying the idle curiosity of a bunch of people not remotely affected by these events and obviously without much concern for anyone who might be.

After all the lies we've been told in the past, why souldn't we be sceptical?

WHO is telling YOU ANYTHING???

Jesus fucking christ. The entire world really IS NOT ABOUT YOU. The world has a life of its own separate and apart from the great satan, you may have failed to notice.

And as I will keep saying for as long as I and everybody else in Canada is being treated by know-nothing foreigners as if we are addle-brained morons who don't have a clue what's going on in the world, BUTT THE HELL OUT.

Your concern for our well-being and security would be welcome, particularly given how much of it we've exhibited for yours in recent years. (Downed flights on September 11 -- all accepted, sight unseen, at Cdn airports in the middle of a crisis of unknown nature and scope? Hundreds of USAmericans taken into people's homes in Canada until they could return home? Military rescue and disaster relief personnel and equipment sent to the Katrina zone? Any of that ring a bell?)

I have not seen a single solitary iota of such concern here in the last week, and I'm sick of being a sideshow for the entertainment of people with very fevered imaginations and no knowledge and no respect.

That answer your questions at all?

13. what might that mean?
a month from now, what difference will it have made?

Probably none, to you.

Since I live a fair bit closer to some of the alleged targets of the alleged bombs, and since I'm not entirely convinced that I should rely on the wisdom of strangers typing crap on the internet more than on the police and intelligence services I pay and rely on to prevent bombs from being exploded in my vicinity, perhaps you can imagine that the investigation of these allegations, versus no investigation because it's all just a Rovian romp, just might made a wee drop of difference to me.

Or perhaps not. Given that I have no idea what your point is, hard for me to tell.

14. Good for Canada, looks like they didn't ignore their 'Phoenix' memo!
See fellow Americans, Canada knows how fight terrorism! They actually STOP the people before the crime, not after. Maybe the DHS and Bush can take some notes from Canada.

17. Anonymous sources
This story by a 'community editor' is mostly based on shadowy anonymous sorces. examples -

1. "international investigators are saying"
2. "Investigators say"
3. "is said to be the latest stage in dismantling a terrorist network that's linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi,"
4. "One American official told The Wall Street Journal"
5. "who had allegedly visited extremists in Canada"

These kind of anonymous sources told us:

1. There was WMD in Iraq aimed at the US
2. Saddom tried to buy yellowcake from Africa
3. Saddam had tubes for building uranium centrafuges
4. Saddam had mobile trailers with biological weapons
5. Saddam was supporting Al-Queda terrorists

All of these 'facts' from shadowy neocon sources have been proven false and 100 thousand people have died because of it and most of the world distrusts America. These arrests are being used to defend unconstitutional, dictatorial actions by American leaders and affects all of us. I think we need to see what shakes out at trial before we declare freedom and democracy dead to preserve out cowardly little asses!
