GOP takes aim at PBS funding
House Republicans yesterday revived their efforts to slash funding for public broadcasting, as a key committee approved a $115 million reduction in the budget for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that could force the elimination of some popular PBS and NPR programs.

On a party-line vote, the House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees health and education funding approved the cut to the budget for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes money to the Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio. It would reduce the corporation's budget by 23 percent next year, to $380 million, in a cut that Republicans said was necessary to rein in government spending.

The reduction, which would come in the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, must be approved by the full Appropriations Committee, and then the full House and Senate, before it could take effect. Democrats and public broadcasting advocates began planning efforts to reverse the cut.

1. They do this every year
Then PBS says, that will be the end of Big Bird and Antique Road Show, and BOOM, it gets dropped.

They can't stand fair and balanced reporting, but they can't fight Elmo and Cookie Monster.

2. $380 million is a tiny drop in the bucket
If they had any interest AT ALL in curbing government spending they would get us the hell out of Iraq.

Kill PBS

Sell our National Parks off to big donors.

Starve our public schools

Keeping the people uninformed while they bleed us dry and kill the planet to fulfill their endless greed is their ultimate goal. I have quite a few friends who work for PBS (announcers and reporters) and they already live in scruffy apartments-any more pay cuts and they'll be earning Wal-mart wages. Meanwhile, the station managers are all repugs who don't understand that they're voting against their own interests...

7. They should just start with cutting all the CONSERVATIVE programing
Like that McNeil Lahrer dude (is he still alive?)

In his place, they can just play the "Sugartime" episode of "Postcards from Buster" EVERY DAY at 3:00 PM.

(See also: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40188-2005Jan26.html )

Also, they can cut costs by finding Liberal activists willing to volunteer their time as hosts and producers for talk shows-- replacing all their over-paid conservative commentators.

I really want Margaret Cho to have her own political television talk show.

Conservatives don't want to fund PBS? Fine! Let's just serve the audience that actually wants to pay for it.
