Dems want Blackwell to step aside, shouldn't oversee election, they insist

Ted Wendling
Plain Dealer Bureau

Columbus - Ohio Democrats called Thursday for Secretary of State Ken Blackwell to step aside from "overseeing his own election," proposing that someone not running for office serve as the state's elections chief.

Prominent among their recommendations: Republican Attorney General Jim Petro, whom Blackwell savaged on the campaign trail before handily defeating him in last month's GOP gubernatorial primary.

Democrats aren't suggesting Blackwell give up the office, but they do want him to turn over his voting oversight role until after the November election.

Lee Fisher, Rep. Ted Strickland's running mate in the governor's race, said Democrats are asking Blackwell to relinquish his election duties because he has been "deliberately misconstruing the intent of the law" by publishing onerous rules pertaining to voter-registration drives...

5. "Throw bricks at his dog"?
No, vandalism and mindless cruelty against innocent animals won't advance a damn thing. Getting loud and being entirely unrelenting about the issue with statements to the press and television and radio ads-now that might change something.

Or getting screwed by the recipients of their generosity? Creating a decade-long low-wage-worker opportunity????

Check this out: http://www.daytondailynews.com/localnews/content/localnews/daily/0609jobs.html

Region's jobs outlook is state's gloomiest
Through 2014, the employment growth in the Dayton area will lag behind the rest of the state.

Mainly, 2nd tier service jobs, healthcare, and fast food all that's left here. Very few corporate headquarters for business pro careers or IT (most of which has been outsourced, anyhow)

33. Sad but true
And if anyone for a moment thinks he won't cheat his eevr cheating butt off has a thumb stuck up their butt to try to find gold. THe worst part is how the Conservatives are backing him and explaining his cheating away as 'nothing the people will do anything about." And "Expected".

This country has been taken over by people who will do anything to retain power, even destroy the country they claim to be serving.

21. But "we" already turned down a chance to have this happen.
There was an issue on the ballot last year and it failed. The opposition to it framed it as "you will no longer get a say, no longer get to vote for, who is in charge of elections.

6. In a way, it could be good . . .
. . . only in the sense that, should BootBlackwell win, it'd be hard to try and explain how he legally overcame a seemingly insurmountable 16-point deficit in the polls.

But yes, conflict of interest obviously means NOTHING to crime bosses like Dick Cheney and shameless criminal minions like Crackwell.

30. amen!
it disgusts me that he's from my state, and this soiled story is centered around the word "OHIO"...
so upsetting. we need to set a date and if things are fixed by that date, march.

we need an activities calendar that shows deadlines for pressing matters, and then who we need to contact to set up organized rallies...

I'm all for picketing the sob's here, there, everywhere!

12. Can you say conflict of interest? Blackwell cannot be trusted to oversee
his own election.

He isn't Andy Taylor of Mayberry, North Carolina, after all. It's just ridiculous that this is even an issue. People directly involved in the outcome of something like this should step down and let a neutral party oversee things. Any idiot can see that.

Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 11:37 AM by Botany
Repub and Dems have been Sec. of State in Ohio have overseen elections
for years and did it fairly so he has case law behind him.

BTW It is not a question about if he will cheat but how and by how much?

He needs to be in jail for his crimes.

Blackwell has no integrity. He cannot be trusted. Major Kudos to the Ohio Dems for bringing this issue to the public's attention.

18. We know blackwell won't step aside....we have yet to see
a pug do the decent thing.

As a result, the ODP must organize Exit Polls....either hire a Research firm that is experienced in this or set up a system in-house using local University Professors, volunteers and some paid staff.

In fact, let's write the ODP Chair, Chris Redfern, and Vice-Chair, Todd Portune, and ask them to devote energies to this. OK?

28. How is this even a question?
In ANY other profession, one would have to recuse themselves in the face of such a clear conflict. This is no different than a judge hearing a case in which he or she has a financial interest, or a referee who happens to own the team playing in the game in which he or she is officiating.

The fact that people are treating this as a debate is ludicrous.

I have a feeling I know what she's up to, but I hope I'm wrong.

Should she be in charge of her own election?

Did they forget to write that law?

Why isn't it illegal to run a party's campaign and oversee that election? Another law legislatures forgot to write?

WHY SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO "ASK"???
