U.S. ministers saw no distress in Haditha
U.S. ministers saw no distress in Haditha
By GIOVANNA DELL'ORTO, Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA - A minister embedded with some of the Marines who are alleged to have killed up to two dozen civilians in Haditha,

Iraq, after one of their own died in a roadside explosion says he heard about the dead civilians but saw no distress among Iraqis or Marines in Haditha several weeks after the killings.

"I knew he had been killed and there had been a response. I got the impression insurgents were killed and also some civilians got killed," the Rev. Christopher Price of suburban Atlanta recalled Friday of his conversations with Marines in Haditha in January.

"As it was presented, it seemed a normal part of what happened. It seemed a sort of regrettable but also fairly typical incident. I saw nothing that betrayed any difficulty between the Marines and the people of Haditha."

Price couldn't recall who exactly told him about the killed civilians and said he didn't ask for details.

...

"If this thing had been as horrible as it's been made out to be, the people of Haditha would have been up in arms when we were there," said Mathes, who said he first learned of the accusations when they recently became public.

1. What a total dickhead. The people of Haditha were scared
shitless to say anything. So now they are using a fucking minister as a witness? Did Jesus make him clairvoyant?

If you can't take the word of an embedded minister from suburban Atlanta (who presumably speaks fluent Arabic and also reads minds), who can you trust?

3. A "minister" who "didn't ask for details" re civilians being killed?
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 05:09 PM by Divernan
Well, that put the Jeebus stamp of approval on the killers, didn't it?

As to the people of Haditha not being "up in arms" or showing "distress" to Marines who had just slaughtered fellow villagers, I wouldn't have expected them to be confrontational, would you? Let's see now, who had all the weaponry & had previously displayed out-of-control, murderous behavior toward people who were praying in their homes? Hard to be "up in arms" when the other side has ALL the arms!

How lodged can one parson's head get? Mathes famous accessment:
.....the people of Haditha would have been up in arms when we were there.
Not if they knew they'd be by god slaughtered. Jeezus H. Christ on a pogo stick.

The genius, Rev. Ben Mathes

Price and Mathes are both connected with the "not for profit Christian ministry," "Rivers of the World."

5. Smells to high heaven
Something didn't sound right about this. I googled and found that he was "embedded" as a journalist, not a minister, and that his son Adam is a platoon commander who is up to his eyeballs in the Haditha incident as well as having been a platoon commander in Fallujah. Here is some info:
http://www.11alive.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=75612

"Dr. Mathes went with his son's unit on patrol He was with them when they kicked in the doors of suspected insurgent hideouts. He was with them when they were the target.

“We got rocketed one night. All the whoops of the bombs landing around us, rocked all of us,” he said.

Dr. Mathes says he was never scared.

“Their courage is very contagious. I don't know that I found myself afraid at all. You don't have time to be,” Mathes said.

Accompanied by his best friend, Presbyterian minister Dr. Chris Price, Dr. Mathes says he got inventive in the name of God.

“We got to the do the Lord's Supper, do the Sacraments, a tangible sign of God's invisible love,” Dr. Mathes said."

This is all so wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to begin. Kicking down people's doors is a tangible sign of God' love?

7. That's gotta be a first: taking a man of Gawd along kicking down doors.
Just when you think the world can't get any uglier.

You're right. Something smells here.

8. More about this guy's son:
http://www.buckheadbusiness.org/bba/DesktopModules/EditCalendarEvents.aspx?ItemId=135&Date=4/27/2006

"1st Lt. Adam Mathes has just returned from two tours of active duty in Iraq, as the Platoon commander in the Battle of Fallujah as well as the commander of more than 70 Marines, Sailors and Navy SeALs, tanks and Amtracs in that battle. In charge of operations and intelligence, Lt. Mathes stabilized the insurgent stronghold of Haditha and laid the groundwork for peaceful democratic processes, including Iraq's first safe, free and fair elections."

Oh, yeah, the dad is obviously giving a "fair and balanced" account!

13. Fearless soldier takes Daddy to work!
Probably to absolve him minute-to-minute for following unlawful orders to occupy Iraq "whatever it takes," civilian murders included.

Read me a bedtime story about Abraham, Daddy. Ya know, where he puts his kid on the rock and draws out his big, big sword...

27. Well done.
Here is a nugget from your link that offers insight:

"I'll see you on this side of the River or the other, that's how we ended our time together,” he said.

“The River” plays a big part in Dr. Mathes' life in more ways than one. He heads a Christian organization called Rivers of the World, and travels to the most dangerous parts of many continents to give aid.

~~~~~~~~~~
Apparently "Dr." Mathes is a so called missionary and as such is a traditional part of the system which supports U.S. imperialism. It's not surprising he and his companion see nothing wrong with traveling half way around the world to pillage and commit mass murder. From the article in the OP:
"As it was presented, it seemed a normal part of what happened. It seemed a sort of regrettable but also fairly typical incident. I saw nothing that betrayed any difficulty between the Marines and the people of Haditha."
<snip>
"If this thing had been as horrible as it's been made out to be, the people of Haditha would have been up in arms when we were there," said Mathes, who said he first learned of the accusations when they recently became public.
I want to know exactly how often children -or any civilians- are shot in order for this chaplain to call those deaths "typical"
fear of reprisals. "typical" does not mean peaceful, quiet, everything is ok.
18. Why do we have a Christian Crusader scum embedded with the troops?
and a Presbyterian at that!
Here is what he wrote:
Don't Run With War Rumors News/Updates:
Christopher Price - For the Journal-Constitution
Tuesday, June 6, 2006
Articles and newscasts on the Haditha incident --- and Murtha's comments --- tend to paint a picture of trigger-happy Marines on a tirade, worn down by responsibility, angry and contemptuous of the local population. That image couldn't be more different from what we saw while in Haditha.
These were young men living in primitive conditions, but alive to the changes they hoped to bring to Iraq. More than once when we asked them about their mission there, we heard the phrase in one form or another, "I want to be a part of something good. I want to help these people toward freedom.":puke: If it sounds corny here, in Haditha it made your heart glow.
Before anyone rushes to judgment --- especially politicians --- condemning them or any military people for crimes against humanity, let's allow the investigators to have their time. Then, whatever their report, let's remember that only a few were involved in whatever happened Nov. 19, 2005.
If the allegations are true, they allowed the deep comradeship and affection of brothers-in-arms to morph into something blind and unthinking that should have been checked by their training.
19. Here is more from these evangelizing morons...
Rev. Price preaching to the troops
and the sob is not even a chaplain
Read & Listen To Ben & Chris' Trip to Iraq:
01-04-06 - A MESSAGE FROM BEN & CHRIS: We are in the CPIC Central Press Information Command- it is 4 AM and we just finished an amazing trip from one base to here via Rhino- a well armored truck of sorts. We were part of a caravan that took us across town. Lots of armor, hummers and soldiers leading us through the city. The trip has been a
blessing.
At every turn we are met by US and Iraqi folks who are so helpful and kind. Major Ali helped us get Visas at the airport- a journalist named Maya from the Washington Times has helped us navigate the maze of phone calls and paper work- we've been taught how to eat MRE's by a gang of soldiers from Georgia- and led through dark places by soldiers who are just out of school!
America is blessed with young men and women who know their job, are proud of their service, are humble and yet thankful for praise, and deserving our support!
If you are reading this note- please- take a moment and give thanks for all the service people who keep us free and represent us to the world! We get 2 hours sleep and begin the process to fly up country. Will broadcast back once we are embedded with the Marines.
We leave you now overwhelmed by the dedication of OUR troops in a very foreign land.
God bless America!
Ben and Chris
