Aussies warned off Iraq (mercs urged to leave)
DOZENS of Australians working as private security guards in Iraq are being urged to leave the war-torn country following the death of a Queensland man north of Baghdad.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the man's death on Thursday highlighted the dangers of living and working in Iraq.
The man, identified by today's Daily Telegraph as Wayne Schulz, 34, is the sixth Australian to be killed in Iraq since the outbreak of war in 2003.

He was employed by the multi-national security firm ArmorGroup and was killed while providing protection for a convoy about 300 km north of the Iraqi capital. Three other people also died in the explosion.

Mr Downer said the vehicle containing the four was hit by an explosive device hidden in a culvert.

"It does underline the real dangers for people going to Iraq," Mr Downer told reporters.

1. The United States wanted this war - let THEM fight it
.
.
.

every one else should just go home

That's not to indicate that even the USA should be there

The USA should go home too, but they ain't building Military bases faster than hospitals, schools, power stations, water treatment plants, etc. because they intend to leave . . .

(sigh)

2. This is how public officials are supposed to act--looking out for their
people. I applaud Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and note the sharp contrast with basically every Bush official. Now if the Aussies could just ditch Howard.

4. The Australian govt doesn't look out for their people...

Ask David Hicks, who had to go to extraordinary lengths and apply for British citizenship because the Australian govt, unlike other govts, haven't been pressuring the US to release their citizens imprisoned at Gitmo. Or ask the dozens of Australian citizens deported from our country after mistakenly being thrown into detention centres how well the Australian govt looked after them. After being paid around $75,000 each in a settlement that includes a confidentiality clause they may not be too interested in talking though :)

When I see Downer pushing to pull Australian troops out of Iraq coz it's so dangerous, then I'll rethink my position...

5. Obviously, you know better than I do. I was cheering for
what I saw as a positive "baby step". Downer is probably a complete asshole if Howard hired him.
