SLA soldiers massacre family of four in Vankalai, Mannar

SLA soldiers armed with bayonets and knives entered the house of a family of four and slaughtered 35-year-old father, 27-year-old mother, 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son Thursday midnight in Vankalai, 12 km southeast of Mannar. Eyewitnesses in the area, Thomaspuri Ward No 10 in Vankalai, have told Mannar Additional Magistrate that they could identify the soldiers involved in the massacre. Villagers alleged the mother was raped before the massacre. Tension prevails in Vankalai. Religious leaders including the Bishop of Mannar, parliamentarians and civil society members in Mannar have rushed to site. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission officials have visited the massacre site.

It has to stop now! What is happening to human beings, that we can commit such atrocities? I am choking with rage and sorrow at the images I see every day. Why can't we stop this? There are more everyday citizens than there are the ones who slaughter on a whim, and kill just because...have we lost every vestige of humanity, then? At the age of 63, I could normally look forward to many more years of life, but if dying tonight could stop this bloodshed, this pain, I would do it gladly. Why do we allow this to happen? Speaking only for myself, though, I would gladly die tonight, if my death could stop this horror, this pain.

I have nothing left to give but my life, and that is apparently not enough to stop the violence and bloodshed. What a sorry spectacle we have become, the mightiest country ever, giving in to shadow enemies, and fake dangers. I have nothing left to give to the cause of peace, and understanding. Our current regime has crossed those things off of their list, and will respond only to more bloodshed, and more violence.
