Ku Klux Klan converges on Antietam battlefield
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/10/klan.antietam.ap/index.html

"SHARPSBURG, Maryland (AP) -- Members of the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups rallied Saturday at the Antietam National Battlefield, believed to be the first time a group was given permission to demonstrate at the site of the bloodiest day of the Civil War.

About 30 people, some in white robes and others in the military-style clothing and swastika armbands of the National Socialist Movement of America, stood next to a farmhouse on the battlefield. Some delivered speeches attacking immigrants, blacks and other minority groups.

About 200 federal, state and local officers watched to ensure peace and to act as a buffer between the Klan and about 30 counter-demonstrators.

Antietam carries powerful symbolism, said Gordon Young of the Ku Klux Klan. "As the Klan, we are the ghosts of our Confederate brothers and sisters who died here," Young said."

I know they burned crosses at the homes of Catholics in the teens and 1920s when my father was growing up out there.

I've seen people roaming the edge of the battlefield with metal detectors on a farm that was still in use. Looking for relics. But that was over 15 years ago. I heard they wanted to build housing at the edge of the battlefield. "Battlefield Estates". Pfui.

It's disgusting -- so many soldiers died both there and at the nearby Wilderness, and what have they done? Have these McMansions literally elbowed in next to parts of the battlefield. Good grief. Like there isn't enough other available land around Fredericksburg to develop...

42. in 1990 or 91 there was a major attempt to build a shopping mall
near or over (I never got enuff info to know for sure) a Nazi concentration camp near Berlin. The argument for: 'we've gone years without good consumer access and now you in the west want to deny to us what you have had all along.'!?!?!?!?!

As I recall, the project was defeated.

20. Certainly a bone to the GOP base (re; low poll numbers).
My Dad ran the nation's oldest roller rink in the U.S. in Braddock Heights MD. when the GOP took power by employing movie actor Ronald Reagan and apparently some bad Hollywood script writers in an appeal to it's traditional base of bigots and other dull witted types. The KKK came out of the woodwork to hold a massive rally on the large property my Dad's roller rink was situated on.(The roller rink was the last building standing in this circa 1900 amusement park). Considerably more than 30 people too. It was about this time when a man was brought into nearby Frederick Memorial Hospital where my Mom worked as a lab tech with anthrax from Ft. Deitrick. I have always made a connection in my mind with the KKK types which was reinforced when anthrax was mailed to the far right's hit list right after "liberal" targets New York and Washington were attacked on September 11th, 2001.

I would also note that the title "National Socialists" is as misleading now as it was in the 1920s and 30s and have often heard freepers and their ilk claim that Hitler and his band of frothy mouthed speed freaks were liberal socialists. "International anti-socialists is much more appropriate. No coincidence either, I think, that Al Zarqawi's alleged targets are all those pesky "liberal" Europeans and that foreign fighters captured in Iraq include 3 Frenchmen, so "liberal" they once gave us a huge statue of miss Liberty... (Liberal means liberty and Miss Liberty is the personification of Liberty or liberal thought manifested)

52. They weren't protesting the roller rink
just taking advantage of the location both in terms of it's being a large open space and as being centrally located in th Maryland foothills of the Appalachias for mid east coast bigotry. This rally might be worthy of mention in a history of the Klan as I think this rally was one that led the early Reagan era revival of the Klan.

The fact that Ft. Deitrick, The Army's main biological warfare labs, is located in this location and that the hit list of the anthrax mailer was pretty much identical to one the KKK might have just seems significant. Of course Camp David is also located near by....

30. It is probably because no one else would think of using a Civil War battle
site as a place for a political demonstration. While no one else thinks much of the battle between the states, these nuts are still bitter that they lost.

The area around Sharpburg is absolutely beautiful. Too bad it had to be tainted by these idiots.

27. The Constitution says the Klan and other groups can speak their
agenda, even if it is hate-laced and in defiance of the majority's sensibilities.

Promoting equality and diversity at a far earlier point in life is more effective than condemning Klan members when they're adults. We lost them a long time ago. I don't have any brilliant strategies for persuading them to change their minds about minorities, if as adults they can't see what they're doing is discriminatory. I wish I did.

Apologies to all you lurking Trent Lott fans, but every time I hear a post-Nixon Southern Strategy Republican speak in racial codes, I hear the muffled voice of a Klansman hiding under a hood in the Old South. Many long-ago Democrats opposed the civil rights movement. But by the end of the 1960s most Democrats had embraced the movement, even at enormous political cost in the South. Nixon's Southern Strategy swept into the vacuum of unchanged attitudes and capitalized on the resentment and anger, and very sad to say, it was a deft political ploy.

To kick the shit out of these neo-Nazi bastards. These fucks just haven't grasped the fact that the Confederacy and most people with those attitudes and beliefs, are long-gone and ain't comin' back.

And for the record, I had great-great-uncles and a great-great-grandfather fighting for the South in battles from Gettysburg in the North to Vicksburg in the South. They fought for what they believed in (a host of things -- among them racism and slavery) and I can still honor and respect them for that, but it was damn near 150 YEARS AGO. There's an historical CONTEXT at work that those inbred fucks just don't get.

If you still believe in that racism and slavery shit, there is something seriously fucking wrong with you. One of these days I'm gonna happen upon one of these "marches" and kick someone so hard that their testicles will pop out of their eye sockets.
