First tropical depression forms in Caribbean
Here we go.......
___________________________

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- A tropical depression in the Caribbean headed toward Florida on Saturday and was expected to become the first named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season.

The depression formed earlier in the day, nine days after the official start of the season, but the poorly organized system was not expected to become a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

2. We'll probably get a lot of rain
which we could use right now.

Actually, it could be benefical to get some of the energy out of the system early. I would prefer smaller, more frequent storms, rather then a couple of really big ones.

4. It's going to fizzle out over the Gulf of Mexico
Mainly rain blow off will effect Florida, which is a great thing as they can use all the rain they can get right now.

3. Reuters: Tropical depression douses Cuba, may become storm
Tropical depression douses Cuba, may become storm
Sun Jun 11, 2006 5:29am ET

WASHINGTON, June 11 - (Reuters) - The first tropical depression of the 2006 Atlantic
hurricane season dumped heavy rain on Cuba on Sunday and could become a tropical storm
as it moves toward the United States, U.S. forecasters said.

The depression, which would be given the name Alberto if its maximum sustained winds
reached 39 mph (63 kph), had shifted to the west in the last several hours and was
located around 335 miles west-southwest of Key West, Florida, and moving northwest
near 9 mph (15 kph) at 5 a.m. (0900 GMT).

Its maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph (55 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane
Center said. It was expected to move to the northwest or north-northwest in the next
24 hours, on a track that could take it to Florida's west coast early on Tuesday.

The weather system was expected to douse Cuba with 20 inches or more of rain.

<snip>

Forecasters said the depression could become a tropical storm later on Sunday.

6. Now a named-storm, "Alberto"
Alberto Becomes 1st Named Storm of Season

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 11, 2006

MIAMI (AP) -- Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season, developed Sunday from a poorly organized tropical depression in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, forecasters said.

The storm had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph -- up 10 mph from early in the morning -- and was expected to strengthen, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Alberto was located about 400 miles west of Key West and about 445 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, and moving northwest near 9 mph, forecasters said.

7. NHC 11AM forecast up
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Looks like west coast of Florida to the panhandle (NHC). Seeing shear but forecast aloft winds don't look too bad to me right now. The 500mb wave over the northeast is forecast to amplify but move out by Tue morning. This may not be enough to kick the storm out to the east and into the Atlantic. May continue north a bit more than currently forecast. That's my read right now.

8. Still poorly organized
9:50AM Update
"Due to recon reports, it appears that TD#1 has squeaked above the threshold for becoming a Tropical Storm."

"It is still a very weak system, and probably will either stay that way or fluctuate back and forth."

"The shear has been stronger than previously thought, and it has kept the system weak. It will still continue to push off to the north and east and give Florida a good cloud cover as well as some rain. The current forecast now has the system still making landfall as a minimal tropical storm, and since the system is now in the Gulf there is little reason to doubt that forecast."
