U.S. Military Rejects Reports Al-Zarqawi May Have Been Beaten

June 11 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. military dismissed as ``baloney'' reports that American soldiers may have beaten Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, before he died on June 7 after a U.S. air strike on a house north of Baghdad.

``He died while American soldiers were attempting to save his life,'' General George Casey, who leads coalition forces in Iraq, told the Fox News Sunday television program. ``So the idea that people were beating him is ridiculous.''

The London-based Sunday Times today quoted an eyewitness as saying he saw American soldiers take Zarqawi from an ambulance, tear his robe to check for explosives, then kick him repeatedly in the chest while demanding his name.

The soldiers were ``shouting and screaming and in a very tense and agitated mood,'' Ali Abbas, a 25-year-old laborer who was one of the first at the scene and had helped pull Zarqawi from the rubble of the house, told the Sunday Times.

``They kept kicking him with their boots, shouting `what's your name?', but the man only moaned and said nothing,'' Abbas told the newspaper. He estimated it took a quarter of an hour for Zarqawi to die from when he was removed from the ambulance.

Somehow I don't think the "We bombed him to save his life" excuse isn't going to fly.

1. Same guys also regaled us with tales of Jessica Lynch's great
feats of derring do before being wounded. They also staged a bogus "rescue," pretending they had to do it to save her life, when the truth was the hospital personel had TRIED to return her earlier, and were turned away.

13. Thank you.
Now that I think of it though, the actual quote comes from Chico, in Duck Soup. I love the Internet--you can find an incorrect citation for just about anything.

6. The Iraqi's story sounds plausible
And the Pentagon response sounds like lying with the truth.

``He died while American soldiers were attempting to save his life,'' General George Casey, who leads coalition forces in Iraq, told the Fox News Sunday television program. ``So the idea that people were beating him is ridiculous.''

Note it is not a denial - just "the idea is ridiculous", as if ridiculous ideas don't get actuated all the time. The whole Iraq war is an example of a ridiculous idea that turned into reality.

9. Brought to you by the same military that lied about Haditha and Ishaqi
massacres. Perhaps we should issue cameras to every Iraqi so that they can capture for posterity images that contradict Crusader lies.

Of course it is! These lying Iraqi's will say anything. It has happened too many times, they lie and tell us something, then later we find out it is false.

12. The worst thing is that
this sort of thing is likely to please, mostly through repressed anger, the Idiot's large base. Displaced hatred is a very powerful leverage that the worst governements have always used. On the other hand, this sort of things constitutes a guarantee that the US will not be able to positively engage, and truly cooperate with, any nation in the ME for several generations. The short-sightedness, or stupidity, of this governement since 2000 is of historical proportion.

Zarqawi Beaten, 'That's Baloney'
U.S. General Dismisses Claims That Troops Hit Qaeda In Iraq Leader

(CBS News) BAGHDAD The top commander of U.S. troops in Iraq brushed back claims that slain al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was beaten by U.S. forces after his hideout was bombed Wednesday.

"The way I respond to the comments of the alleged Iraqi who saw what went on there is: 'that's baloney,'" Gen. George Casey said.

An Iraqi man who was one of the first people on the scene of the U.S. airstrike targeting al-Zarqawi said he saw American troops beating a man who had a beard like the al Qaeda leader.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Casey said al-Zarqawi died while American soldiers were attempting to save his life.

16. "...beating a man who had a beard like the al Qaeda leader." That would
only cover about two-thirds of the men in Iraq (a man with a similar beard), wouldn't it?

I call bullshit.

Why did this American general refer to the "alleged Iraqi", people are not alleged, claims of crimes are alleged.

17. Zarqawi's baloney was beaten? By whom? Why?
Does it have anything to do with the women's clothes and the photo of FDR? I'm getting soooooo confused.

19. Casey is the same liar
that said he died in the bombing two days ago. Then the story morphed into he was still alive when we found him but he died on the stretcher. Then the story evolved again to say that he not only mumbled something and but tried to get up to run away. Now we learn that he very well my have been beaten to death while in US Custody.

Why would Casey lie about such a thing? :sarcasm:
