Bush makes surprise visit to Iraq
U.S. Embassy confirms surprise trip, expected to last five hours
NBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 15 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq on Tuesday to meet newly named Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and discuss the next steps in the troubled, 3-year-old war.

The first report came via Iraqi state television, and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad confirmed the visit with NBC News.

Bush’s visit is expected to last five hours, during which he will likely meet with American troops.

It was a dramatic move by Bush, traveling to violence-rattled Baghdad less than a week after the death of terror chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a bombing attack. The president was expected to be in Baghdad a little more than five hours.

101. He's trying to persuade the Iraqis and us...........
now that Al-Zarqawi is dead that Iraq is a much safer place. :eyes: Sure thing, "W".......... Sneaking in and out of the country on an unannounced visit in cover of darkness isn't that reassuring. Just another photo-op for bushie, like standing on the heap of rubble at The World Trade Center and pounding a few nails in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. :eyes: Then he'll sneak away and it'll be business as usual afterward. More Americans and Iraqis will die.......nothing has changed. :puke:

Coward. And Distractor. Mr. 29% is trying to look all stud-ly; where was he again during Vietnam?? Oh, I remember, sniffing coke and drinking Jack Daniels.

Try driving from the airport to the city of Baghdad, Mr. President, and then maybe I will give you some grudging respect. Until them, you are still in your bubble - it has just been moved to Baghdad.

69. Check out the CNN web site
Right under the Bush story is a headline about profiteering contractors! The Bush story itself isn't too flattering. He shows up to greet the President of Iraq who is only given "5 minutes notice that someone important is arriving"?!?! Does that mean that Bush doesn't even trust the Iraqi President to maintain security?

In a Bold Move, Bush Drops in on Iraq PM

By TERENCE HUNT

AP White House Correspondent

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - President Bush reviewed next steps in the troubled three-
year old Iraq war on Tuesday in a suprise visit to Baghdad and a meeting
with newly named Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The dramatic move came
as Bush sought to bolster support for Iraq's fledgling government and U.S. war
policy at home.

Bush traveled to violence-rattled Baghdad less than a week after a U.S. air strike
killed terror chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The president was expected to be
in Baghdad a little more than five hours.

Bush met with al-Maliki in the heavily fortified green zone at a palace once used
by Saddam Hussein but which now serves temporarily as the U.S. Embassy.

"Good to see you," exclaimed al-Maliki, who didn't know Bush was in Baghdad until five
minutes before they met.

Of course, this is just a photo op for President Flightsuit to cash in on al Zarqawi's death.
He has even less credibility in Iraq than the government. His presence won't help al Maliki.

75. "Bold" is patrolling the streets of Baghdad with
inadequate body armor. How dare the media whores use terms like "bold" and "dramatic" to describe the stealth visit of a chickenshit who'd be dead within a minute if his visit was announced beforehand. You'd think by now the public would have caught on to this inane propaganda machine and demand honest journalism. Pathetic.

83. A Distraction from Alberto in the Gulf

My theory is that this is a distraction from Alberto in the Gulf. Alberto reminds people of Katrina and the incompetence and racism of the Bush Administration.

Also, the last time he did this stunt, it was to distract attention from Hilary Clinton's trip to Iraq later that same day.

84. Now let's get real.
There is a photo of Bush on Yahoo news meeting with Mr. Al-Maliki. He's just gushing, shakes his hand lovingly. About 3 weeks ago, Rumsfailed and Rice went over there, proclaiming "a new beginning" and "warm relations" with the New and Improved Iraq.

Here's the truth: Mr. Al-Maliki is not a US puppet. He is an ally of Mr. Jaafari who was ousted by the US and the UK. He was chosen by Muqtada Al Sadr, George Bush's enemy #1.

Mr. Maliki has been criticizing the US, about Haditha and other atrocities.

This is nothing more than a PR Photo Op, designed for domestic consumption. Nothing but pure desperation.

98. Here's what I thought was interesting . . .
Iraqi PM Maliki didn't know * was coming. I thought he was head of a sovereign Iraqi state. Isn't it proper protocol for a visiting head of state to ask permission before entering the territory of another sovereign state? I mean Tony Blair wouldn't just pop by unannounced.

Does this mean that the Iraqi gov't is not sovereign? Is this proof that they are just a puppet gov't? Just asking.

Notice how Bush holds his arm across Maliki's back. It's a patronizing gesture, like "don't worry I'll protect you". He did the same thing with Mahmoud Abbas in Palestine. It's an obvious power ploy.

103. How brave, lights out and the middle of the night
Security concerns meant Mr Bush's journey was top secret.

Only Vice President Dick Cheney, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were aware he had slipped away on Monday night from a meeting on Iraq lasting several days at his Camp David retreat near Washington.

Aides said he was in the cockpit of Air Force One when it landed in the Iraqi capital with a sharp bank and quick landing. He took an 8-minute helicopter ride in searing heat to the "Green Zone" for talks with the Iraqi cabinet and U.S. commander in Iraq General George Casey at the U.S. embassy.

Mr Bush left after night fell to return to Washington. The plane left at a steep angle with its lights out and the shades drawn. Mr Bush said a main objective in Iraq was to create a sense of order so that people there could feel more comfortable going about their daily lives. But he said eliminating all violence was an "impossible standard."

OMG, what a fucking hero, Bush took an 8 min. chopper ride in the searing heat. :sarcasm: How about our young soldiers taking 3 tours of duty in the searing heat with a large, angry Arab population shooting, bombing, maiming and killing them? :nuke:

Good try, BushCo execs, trying to make * look heroic. Put the codpiece picture back up as a backdrop and let's see how far you dimwits get. :argh:
