Democrats promise more oversight if they win House

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - Democratic lawmakers said on Wednesday that they would investigate spending in Iraq and require government agencies to comply with accounting rules if voters give them control of the House of Representatives in November's elections.

"The American people deserve to know how their tax dollars are spent," Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, of California, said at a news conference.
Pelosi and other Democrats have begun to lay out the agenda they will enact if they win control of the House in November, an outcome political analysts say is possible.

...

A bill introduced by California Rep. Dennis Cardoza would force agency heads who don't produce a clean audit within two years to appear before the Senate for reconfirmation.

"There is no business in America that would be run the way this country is being run," said Tennessee Rep. John Tanner, like Cardoza a member of the Blue Dogs coalition of centrist Democrats. "The books are so fouled up we can't tell what's going on."

1. Of Course... A Single Act of Oversight...
Would be a 100% increase (perhaps even a greater than 100% increase)! Therefore, their promise is awfully easy to live up to...

2. Any oversight would be an improvement
But I also like some of the framing here: "No business in America" can run the way the GOP is running the government. Hits the GOP at one of their allegedly strong points, that they're better managers.

25. Yes. Any at all.
Note: The airlines seem to be able to run the govt. like pugs. Charge, charge, taxpayer bailout.

Reckoning is coming to both.

5. Pelosi should have said 'When we win"
See by saying "if" she is showing reasonable doubt. "When we win" of course shows optimism......And we only have 5 months to go and there hasn't been much said about the voting machines....

33. Yes he an oinker, so what. One art of diplomacy is to get people to
see your point of perspective. Since, you failed to answer my question, then you must admit that the Oinkers are far better diplomats than the current collection of democrats. They at least get people to cross the isle to their side. PatriotAct II, Allito, et al. convinced me that the current democrats aren't worth shit.

42. So, can't the Dems get enough people to force things. Really, this whining
"we can't do anything because the Pukes are in charge" is absurd. Can't our "leaders" get some people to see their side? Jesus, we are talking about the Executive Office preempting all of congress, the supreme court, and state houses. Doncha think one or two Repukes might see the light if we had a coherent Democratic point of view. People like you really hold the Democratic Party in low esteem! You think that even though Democrats hold 48% of the seats they hold 0% of the power. Democrats can do better, but people like you continue to apologize for their weak performance and pat them on the back. In my business, we give them a swift kick in the fucking ass and replace them if they don't perform. You go keep voting for losers, just don't expect others to do so.

45. Screw Oversight. Impeach. The Unitary Authoritarian Executive and his
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 08:59 PM by pat_k
. . . henchmen are more than happy to describe the many ways they have nuked the constitution. Bush and Cheney have made it crystal clear that nothing short of Impeachment will put an end to their treasonous exercise of unrestrained power.

Until the Democrats stop pussyfooting around, accuse Bush of his crimes and demand Impeachment, they will continue to sound like mealy-mouthed morons and will fail to engage Americans across the political spectrum who are desperate for REAL strong and decisive leadership that reveres our founding principles.

As long as the bushcheney unitary authoritarian occupies the executive branch, our laws aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Unless Democrats acknowledge that NO progress can be made until we have restored constitutional government and sworn in a legitimate executive, investigation and promises of oversight are an empty sham.

If they try to go after Bush for destroying every constitutional principle we hold dear and turning America into the nation of torture and criminal war, but remain silent on Impeachment, they are just whining.

They can keep whining or do something. Duty or complicity.

"IMPEACH BUSH" is a message of hope and a declaration of our power
