Bus blast kills 62 in Sri Lanka
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - A powerful land mine ripped through a bus packed with commuters and schoolchildren in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday, killing at least 62 people and wounding 78 the army said.

The army blamed the Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack, but the rebels denied responsibility.

Not long after the explosion, Sri Lankan government jets bombed Tamil Tiger positions in the island's northeast, the rebels and a military source said. There was no word on casualties from the raids on rebel-held areas of northeastern Mulattivvu and Trincomalee districts.

3. It's no wonder everyone is at each other's throats...
Even around here where we are supposed to be on the same team.

There is too much hating going on in the world.

My heart is literally hurting right now... lump in my throat... something has got to give.

4. There are a few players in this struggle these days.
It used to be clearly Sinhala vs. Sri Lankan Tamil .

But somebody's been targeting the Muslim community recently, with a few minor pogroms and attacks. Most of the attacks have been in the extreme east, where they live with Tamils; I don't know how concentrated and separate the populations are; but one attack was on a "Muslim village". There's a Muslim presence in the north, both in Tamil and Sinhala areas, and in the extreme west. Those in the west, among the Sinhala, have, as far as I've heard, been left alone.

The north has a large Tamil population. And Muslims, both among the Tamils and among the Sinhalese. But the article doesn't give enough detail as to where the bus bombing was--in Sinhala or Tamil territory, or near Muslim population centers.

There are those that will get upset and go to defend the Muslim community if it's perceived as being as being under attack. So far the Muslims have just taken it.

I'm betting some Tamil group; I really hope it's not a jihadi group, Sri Lanka doesn't need that.
