Man questioned for acting strangely around the vice president

June 16, 2006

BEAVER CREEK – A man was arrested by Secret Service agents when he tried to approach Vice President Dick Cheney in Beaver Creek Village Friday afternoon, said Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren.

Cheney was walking outside when the agents charged with protecting him noticed the man who “wasn’t acting like the other folks in the area,” Zahren said.

“His behavior and demeanor wasn’t quite right,” Zahren said. “The agents tried to question him, and he was argumentative and combative”

While the man was released later in the evening, officials are reviewing possible federal charges.

What will they charge him with, "This one was different than the others" ?

8. my letter to the "reporters"
It might be more useful if reporters actually attempted to provide information - such as what - precisely - is "acting differently"? And did his behaviour threaten Cheney in any way? What is acting "different" than others - scowling instead of cheering? Cheering instead of scowling? Perhaps in a follow up you can actually report the story? By which I mean reporting FACTS not just adjectives?
thanks -

thereby ridiculing bush, cheney, and the SS.

12. May I ask politely....
...just whom or what does this shitweasel Cheney think he is???? A Man-God like a Roman Emperor???Argumentative and COMBATIVE-this is a bald faced LIE-if this guy had EVER raised anything other than his voice within a country mile of Buttmunches security detail he would currently reside in a federal holding facility facing charges of assaulting a Federal officer....these people have passed thru and far past the valley of paranoia and have entered the land of bat shit schizophrenic persecutional crazyness. I hope they never come near me 'cause I act different too...I miss the 50's,we all looked alike and acted different-now we all look different but failure to "act alike" is a federal crime...These clowns may eat my oldest shorts...

27. Missing the point - Getting us OFF message
Secret Service agents are trained to spot certain things. The clearly thought something was odd enough to detain him. That doesn't mean ANYTHING is wrong with what they did. He has even been released, even though they don't even know where he truly lives. Frankly, THAT surprised me.

Some kook is NOT our friend just because he was arrested by the Secret Service. We shouldn't let our dislike/hatred/whatever for Cheney blind us into thinking there is anything with this story other than as reported by the Vail, CO newspaper. To make a big deal out of this (and even talk about it like there's something WRONG with the Secret Service doing their job!) only serves the other side.

Sometimes I think there are people here to make extremist statements and wild allegations (without a scintilla of evidence) only to make this site look ridiculous and unreasonable.

32. I worked Presidential Security issues with the Secret Service
during a Presidential visit to Africa in the 90s. I have nothing but the utmost respect for anyone willing to take a bullet for ANY Secret Service protectee. These absolutely professional men and women don't have the luxury of taking any thing lightly or of letting their guard down at any time. They are career personnel without a political agenda, not Schedule C or higher political flaks. Are they perfect - last time I looked they were human so errors are bound to be made. I want those errors to be made on the side of security for all those the service protects.

Their "clients" include the Fords, the Carters, Mrs. Reagan, the Bushes (41) and the Clintons as well as current officials.

You want to push a test case? Fine, go find a courtroom rather than argue it out with an agent in the field. I don't want them distracted by any assholes pushing an agenda whan the result can be overlooking a threat that is not as vocal/visible.

34. You are right, the story and the site is not there any more
The paper Vail Daily can no longer be accessed online. I guess this story was too new and is not in Google's cache. The reporter, the newspaper and some of their old stories are still in Google's cache.

Someone took down the site.

There's a video game recently out (Hitman: Blood Money) where the final mission requires you to assassinate the US Vice President. Cheney probably heard about it and got paranoid. ;)

41. I feel sorry for the Secret Service protecting Cheney...
If they're on the lookout for people "acting strangely," what do they do about Cheney himself? He acts strangely ALL the time, around EVERYBODY.

I wish the story had included more details...this is way too vague. Did he act strangely like a lunatic out of an asylum? (In which case the Service was absolutely right to question him). Did he not cheer, bow, make obeisance like the rest of the crowd? Or stand at respectful attention? We don't know the answers from this story.
