Mbeki honours June 16 heroes (1976 Soweto uprising)

Scores of schoolchildren were shot dead by police that day 30 years ago while protesting against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in black schools. <snip>

Our biggest challenge therefore is to reduce youth unemployment and the consequent poverty that afflicts many of our young people". <snip>

"As we pay tribute to the 1976 youth, we acknowledge that their struggle was not in vain," said Shilowa, praising them for refusing to bow to apartheid, police brutality and the exploitation to which their parents were subjected. <snip>
