'The Dark Side' Studies When the C.I.A. Fought Cheney, and Cheney Won

In the cliquish, cutthroat high school that is the Bush administration, the Central Intelligence Agency casts itself as Carrie, the disparaged and bullied outsider. And like that ill-used heroine of Brian De Palma's 1976 horror movie, the C.I.A. wants revenge, not by telekinetic power, but through public television.

"The Dark Side," a "Frontline" documentary on PBS tonight, chronicles Vice President Dick Cheney's campaign to wrest control of the intelligence community and hype the case for invading Iraq. It's a hair-raising tale of political infighting, but it has been told many times, particularly by "Frontline," which has produced several similar documentaries about the ill-prepared rush to war.

"The Dark Side" is so intent on hammering home how Mr. Cheney twisted arms — and the facts — that it allows the C.I.A. to whitewash its own failings.

The documentary's assertions about Mr. Cheney are not in doubt. Few dispute that once the White House decided to oust Saddam Hussein, George J. Tenet, the C.I.A. director, fell into line ("slam-dunk"), and skeptical State Department and agency analysts were sidelined and ignored.

3. Sorry I missed that.
Will look for it online. I hardly ever turn on a tv.

So Tenet played the game? And he got outsted once his usefullness was over? How mob-ish. How true to Bush cartel. Use and toss. Thank fates that Tenet didn't pay with his life.

4. Cheney manipulated the CIA.
The Bush Regime needed a rationale to invade Iraq. WMDs fit the bill. They got what they wanted and then turned around and blamed the CIA for faulty Intell. This is how the Bush Regime operates. The rank and file of the CIA got punked and their leader Tenet betrayed them.

18. George (Slam Dunk) Tenant, Former Democratic Staff Director for
the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, appointed Deputy Director Central Intelligence and then Director of Central Intelligence by President Clinton. Nope, he's completely home grown and we can't blame the repugs for him.

8. Tenet was a yes man. I never sensed there was much testerone
in that one. He even claimed that he didn't remember that Clinton gave him the order to get bin Laden - dead or alive.

13. Great ..
Now I remember. I had looked this up the other day and found it is on tonight (Tuesday) and Friday night here. Awesome. PBS has some very interesting offers right now. Their site indicates they have coverage with live insurgents in Iraq and another story about the mercenaries .. "paid contractors".

5. Boston Globe Article Paints Similiar Picture of Cheney/Program
http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2006/06/20/dark_side_sheds_light_on_cheney/

The title is a ripe double-entendre that applies both to Cheney and the turf on which the war against terrorists is fought. "We have to work the dark side, if you will," we hear Cheney say. "Spend time in the shadows of the intelligence world."

To many, Cheney is the dark side of the Bush administration, and this program will only cement that judgment.

6. Cheney intentionally engineered lies to push that war.
In another world, that would be grounds for treason. Now we're just sitting around trying to dilute what he did by pointing fingers at people who could not stop him.

7. That Art Carney line, "Not unless I woke up in Russia this morning."
refusing the Feds access to his home without a warrant, is one of the greatest expressions of the American defiance of abusive authority ever uttered.

May I suggest we all repeat it.

Now, let's work on developing those flame thrower eyes.

10. Cheney is apparently a social Darwinist. Too bad his heart is maladaptive
Rather than being "evil" (whatever that means), I think Cheney's world view is colored by an undercurrent of belief in social Darwinism and rational self-interest. In his mind, the world is incapable of peace and can only be controlled through the iron hand of action (or subterfuge, if needed). It's one way to look at the world, but sadly it is also a philosophy of self-fulfilling prophesy. Cheney has created more of what he seeks to control through action...death, destruction, and discord. Introspection is not tops on his mental list, that's for sure.

TELEVISION REVIEW
'Dark Side' sheds light on Cheney

By Sam Allis, Globe Staff | June 20, 2006

"Frontline" delivers a devastating look tonight at the efforts of Vice President Dick Cheney to gain control of the war on terror after 9/11. In doing so, the show purports, he compromised the integrity of America's intelligence system.

"The Dark Side" is riveting television, heavily reported, that exemplifies what "Frontline" does best: go inside a major story and give us context.

``Frontline" chronicles the brutal campaign by two consummate political in-fighters -- Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld -- to decimate the CIA, politically emasculate Secretary of State Colin Powell, and construct a near-limitless concept of executive power during war. While many of these strands are familiar, they have not been assembled as effectively before on television to present a coherent picture of what happened after 9/11.

16. Anything that hammers home this indictment of cheney is valuable.
And I mean this EVEN IF the CIA gets to whitewash itself. I don't care. The more things are painted badly for cheney, and by extension, for bush, the better.

17. This "Frontline" should be required viewing in every school as an
example of how government can work against the interests of the citizens. I see why the repukes want to do away with PBS. It has too many shows that dare to show the truth.

19. "few dispute"
This pisses me off beyond words. The Times never even bothered to cover it at the time. How did it go from "off the radar" to "undisputed"? It induces a rock throwing fury! How DARE they?

23. Howdy Doody
Bush comes off looking like nothing more than a smiling idiot puppet, with Cheney pulling the strings. I'm sure it's true, but he should be embarrassed it is so obvious.

Great show.
