Thirteen Iraqis killed by alleged US fire on poultry farm
Thirteen Iraqis killed by alleged US fire on poultry farm
7 minutes ago

BAQUBA, Iraq (AFP) - Thirteen Iraqis working in poultry farms in a village near the restive city of Baquba were killed during overnight US raids in the area, Iraqi police and a rights organisation said.

The workers had been sleeping in the fields of Bushaheen village in an area known as Al-Salam (peace), some 90 kilometres (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad, said an Iraqi police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He said that in addition to the 13 killed, four others were wounded and 10 people arrested.

The report was backed up by Hadi al-Azzawi from a human rights organisation in the restive city of Baquba, while the main hospital in the city said it had received 13 bodies.

2. Certainly some damn government somewhere should be able to
step in and demand a halt to the killing of Iraqi civilians. Our own dems aren't going to do it. Someone has to.

14. Please remember....
... that the Democrats are up against both the Republican Party and a complicit media -- and an ignorant public. The playing field is not exactly level, and opposition to the corporate agenda can be a very tricky deal.

Some Dems, especially those in safe regions, need to be more vocal -- like Wellstone. Putting people like Daschle and Harry Reid in charge is NOT the right move, in my opinion.

3. It's obvious they were Al Qaeda. I mean, sleeping in fields?
Only terrorists would sleep in fields.

20. Actually, some were probably children disguised as
terrorists. (Those terrorists are really crafty that way, you know?) :)

5. Chickens of Mass Destruction?
I suppose this would have been approved of by the chickenhawks.

You would think a raid on a chicken farm would be someone's idea of a joke, but there's no humor here.

8. more details here: US forces kill 15 suspected insurgents in Iraq raids
~snip~
Reuters footage showed 13 bodies covered with blankets lying in the back of open trucks. All were male. A police source said one of the dead was a 12-year-old boy.

The U.S. military said U.S. forces came under small arms fire when they raided the area.

"The ground force returned fire, killing nine armed terrorists on the rooftop, and an additional two armed terrorists who were identified firing on Coalition forces from next to the building, were killed by Coalition aircraft supporting fire," it said in a statement.

An aircraft supporting the troops on the ground hit power lines and had to make a controlled landing. None of the crew were injured, the military said.

16. I guess I don't understand how this "raid" business works.
Are people supposed to just die during a raid, with no effort to flee or attempt at self defense?

...The U.S. military said U.S. forces came under small arms fire when they raided the area.

"The ground force returned fire, killing nine armed terrorists on the rooftop, and an additional two armed terrorists who were identified firing on Coalition forces from next to the building, were killed by Coalition aircraft supporting fire," it said in a statement...

The (American) raid came first, then the small arms fire (Iraqi), then the (American) ground force* returned fire.

Does the use of the term "ground force" imply that there was also an air force?

18. No necessarily.
You could say 'ground force' just for precision or to show that you have more knowledge, without implying other forces. It's a question worth asking, but if the answer comes back 'no' it's not a surprise.

In this case, though, it's the right inference: "An aircraft supporting the troops on the ground hit power lines and had to make a controlled landing."

29. Sounds like poor farmers protecting their meager worldly goods.
And we wonder why they want to kill and torture us.

And "insurgents" cannot be the correct term, as WE are not the lawful government against which to rebel.

Back in the 1940s, New Yorkers used to sleep on rooftops and fire escapes.

21. I worked with a fellow from India
He said in the hot dry season (100+ Fahrenheit) people would remove the roof from the houses (probably parts of the roof from the part of the house they slept in). I guess the houses were built to allow this.

In hot climates without air conditioning people have improvised all kinds of innovative ways of keeping cool. American troops would find these behaviors suspicious, since they aren't done in the U.S. Sometimes suspicious = "blast away".

This is one of the reasons why illegal wars of choice always lead to tragedy and death.

19. The facts point to another massacre.
Those killed were apparently unarmed and insurgents don't work in poultry farms.

Who were the shooters?

25. Poultry farm
When poultry farm was mentioned the first thing that came to my mind was Cheney's unfortunate incident with his rifle. Sorry couldn't resist, but I can't see how the troops were directed to a chicken farm. Why would anyone attack families as they slept. More and more we are seeing these unjustified attacks.

27. Doubtless.
After the incidents in Haditha and Abu Sifa and the subsiquent lying in attempts at cover-up, it simply is not possible to accept statements from the Pentagon, if indeed accepting such statements ever was possible.
