Dan Rather to leave CBS after 44 years
Anchor has been in low-profile role since departure from evening news

BREAKING NEWS

NEW YORK - CBS News said Tuesday it had reached an agreement with Dan Rather for the former anchorman to leave the network after 44 years.

The 74-year-old Rather, who has complained of being virtually forgotten at CBS since his exit as anchor six months after a discredited story on President Bush’s military service, is considering an offer to do a weekly show at the HDNet high-definition network.

1. Screw CBS!
Whereever Rather goes, I go. I'd love to see him get involved with some projects with Bill Moyers. There's still some fight in him yet!

6. The latest rumors are that he will hitch up
with billionaire Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, for some sort of news show. Not sure though.

5. What "discredited" story?
The story about Bush's (lack of) military service was true.

8. Well, it is his fault that Bush went AWOL.
Bush only went AWOL because he knew that decades later, Rather would include a document forged by Karl Rove in a true fact story.

10. One thing I hate about the network news is that they all do it on
6:30 pm.

Why can't they do it on 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM. Why can't one of them be independent of others?

If you miss that time, you missed any network newscasts on that day.

F'em! Turnoff the TV!

"For twenty-five years, Mary Mapes has been an award-winning television producer and reporter -the last fifteen years have been for CBS News, principally for "The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" and "60 Minutes". Following the broadcast of Dan Rather's story on George W. Bush's National Guard Service, Ms. Mapes was fired, Dan Rather's stepped down from his anchor chair a year early, and an unprecedented "internal" inquiry into the story occurred. "

13. Why I've always trusted Dan (A very short true story)
On the day Reagan was shot in 1981 I was at home with my two very small kids, turning from network to network to find out what was happening. (Maybe cable existed in those days, but I didn't have it, and was dialing around CBS ABC and NBC for updates.) ABC's anchor announced that they had reliable news from the hospital that Press Secretary Jim Brady had died. I hated hearing that news so I flipped to NBC. Almost immediately, the NBC anchor also announced that Brady had died. So I flipped over to CBS where Dan Rather was holding the fort. He was speaking of something else, when I could see clearly someone slipped a piece of paper onto the desk in front of him. He looked at it quickly, then turned to the off camera person and asked, "Do we have confirmation on this?" It was obvious the answer was "no", so he said "We'll wait for confirmation before we air this" and went on with whatever else he'd been talking about. It was very clear shortly thereafter that the "scoop" he rejected was the one the other two anchors had aired erroneously. Jim Brady, although horrible hurt, survived, as we all know.
So anyway, from that point on, the only network news I watched was CBS. That is until they screwed Dan over on the Bush awol/draft dodge story. Thank you Dan. I think of you as the last of the real pros.
