Foster care problems continue

The cost per child and the frequency of abuse both have increased as the system has become privatized, a state audit concludes.

By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published June 20, 2006

TALLAHASSEE - The cost of privatizing the state's foster care system has soared in recent years and a higher percentage of children are being repeatedly abused, according to a state audit released Monday.

..cut..

During that time, the per child cost to taxpayers has gone up an average of 10.59 percent a year - or almost 70 percent over the six years when adjusted for inflation.

..cut..
Foster parents also expressed frustration with low payment rates, poor information about children and poor communication with case managers and providers

.....from Tampa Tribune http://www.tbo.com/news/metro/MGB315MPNOE.html

Auditors were limited to a degree because DCF does not require its private providers to report administrative costs, ranging from rent and utility expenses to upper-management salaries.

..more at link....

Cost per child almost doubles in 6 years but you pay your workers less and the foster parents are not seeing increases in child support....

GEEEEEE Corps are making good profits on this.....

1. yeah, it sucks...
but, its worse for the kid...My wife and I tried becoming foster parents, and unfortunately for us, our foster care worker(bitch) was a complete fucking moron. I have a social work degree, and my wife has a degree in American Indian Studies, and we knew more about the process than our case worker...and she fucked us over...and yet, they let horrible people become foster parents, and it makes no sense...btw, we tried with cherokee nation foster care, its a fucking disaster there....sorry, still bitter over it...

2. Florida = Flori-duh!!!
I have looked into becoming a foster parent. Sadly, the cost financially to my own family would add a burden that would be tremendous. These children need the regular time, love, and patience, but they also often need mental health counciling and/ or medical assistance. Unfortunately, the money is now being spent on administration and not on the children. So, until I either become rich and famous like Ms. Jolie or win the lottery, I will have to put this thought on the back burner.

3. yeah
through cherokee nation foster care, i believe the most they paid was 300 for a 14-17yr old...and the younger they were, the less money it was. Not that my wife and I were in it for the money, but it would have cramped us financially, and we were WILLING to do it regardless...just our case worker...ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!...sorry...:(

4. Privatize everything
When the word privatization comes into the conversation get ready for the top tier to make a killing while those on the lower rung(the kids) get the shaft.
