U.S. Back at Full War Footing in Afghanistan

The United States military is quietly carrying out the largest military offensive in Afghanistan since U.S. troops invaded the country in 2001.

"The Taliban has made a comeback, and we have the next 90 days to crush them," said a senior U.S. military official.

The offensive, "Operation Mountain Thrust," involves almost 11,000 U.S. troops and is focused on four southern Afghanistan provinces.

The Taliban has re-emerged as the Afghan government "has created vacuums of power" says the official. Proceeds from the growing opium trade in the region has helped the Taliban obtain new weapons and pay local officials.

1. How are we going to do Iran and North Korea at the same time?
as we struggle through Iraq and Afghanistan. Who else are we going to saber rattle at before we start world war III? Good Lord Almighty.

2. Ooops! Seems "somebody" forgot about Afghanistan.
This coming back to the forefront is not good for the Cons.

3. We need our troops out of Afghanistan also.
If they want to grow poppies why is that our business? We are not the world cops!

5. Actually, the Taliban was preventing them from growing poppies.
The majority of that started AFTER we took them down.

6. "We have the next 90 days to crush them"
How does the unnamed senior U.S. military official propose to do in 90 days what the Red Army couldn't do in 11 years? Ah! The attack without mercy that worked so well for Gen. Custer!

And we'll do it in half a Friedman -- fookin' brilliant.

9. Afghanistan is pretty much off the media radar
until another US soldier is killed. Which shouldn't be long now.

10. K&R-- An important story
The comments are interesting, too.

Bush should have finished the job in Afghanistan and never have attacked Iraq . Our young soldiers would have been safely home now with their families and loved ones. Over 2500 killed in Iraq in a war that is unjustified and could have been averted . Now we will lose more in Afghanistan due to his mis-use of our armed forces for his personal gain .

Too bad we didn't get distracted with other adventures. Think how Afghanistan 'could' have been the shining light of democracy in the Middle east. Alas, if only they had more oil.

If we hadnt made a miscalculated detour into Iraq, and maintained full strength troop presence in Afghanistan where the REAL war on terror was occurring....the Taliban would never have regenerated. We probably would have captured or killed Bin Laden, Zwarhiri, and Mullah Omar!! But my hats off to our boys in Afghanistan fighting. Give 'em hell boys. Stay alive and come back home to your friends and families!!!

the next 100 years. So who do you think will win in the end??
The american bluster shows utter political desperation. The US has lost this one.

12. What;s the significance of 90 days?
Is there a contract expiring then, or something else taking place?

I find their explanations becoming more and more convoluted each day that passes.

13. It's as if there was a quarterly report that needs to be filed or somethin
As if the Jihad worked on an american corporate timetable of immediate recognition and rewards.

They must figure, without any reason why, that if they don't stop this Taliban thing right now, they will lose their "window" of opportunity or some such irrelevant american corporate speak.

15. The new Fiscal Year begins on October 1
Do they only have money for this war until then? Perhaps it is because Bush already claimed victory in Afghanistan.

16. The Taliban never 'went away', they were always in control outside
of the Kabul 'green zone'. They were and are working with the warlords, that has not changed. The only difference between now and two years ago is that it is being reported, imo.
