A Canadian peace activist who kept his sexual orientation a closely guarded secret during four months of captivity in Iraq went on the offensive Tuesday as he accused a prominent church group of discriminating against gay people.
The Ontario State Council of the Knights of Columbus, which finances the Ontario Catholic Youth Leadership Camp in Orillia, Ont., where Loney worked, opted to shut down the camp after learning that he was gay, the former hostage told a news conference.
"The conclusion we have drawn is that this is an act of discrimination," said Loney, who was joined by a number of fellow camp staff members.
Loney, his family and partner Jim Hunt all strived to keep his captors from learning about his sexual orientation for fear it would jeopardize his life. But upon his return, Loney told the world the truth when he introduced Hunt on national television.
