National Guard deployed in NOLA
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13440535/

NEW ORLEANS - Nine months after they rode to the rescue in the desperate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, National Guardsmen carrying M-16s returned to the city Tuesday to reinforce a depleted police department and battle a surge in violence.

The 100 or so soldiers will patrol the streets in ravaged neighborhoods left deserted by Katrina, freeing up police officers to concentrate on more heavily populated sections.

------------

Just curious as to what DU's take on this is?

1. I understand that NO has lost a lot of police officers,,
but my question is if Katrina would not have happened would they call for the National Guard.....I think that this may help in the short term but I have fears that something is going to go wrong.....

Now don't get me wrong....maybe if LA and NO really set up a commission to seriously study...compare other cities who moved away from the crime infestation and what they did to accomplish that....and then try to implement those ideas in NO....then maybe they would have a chance...

2. Is this not to be expected? Soaring suicide rates and crime.
This city, as well as most of the gulf coast, has been abandoned by this country and this government in their time of need. Trash piles, dead bodies still being found 10 months after Katrina, and devastated homes with some small FEMA trailers while others live in tents or homes rotting with mold. The fact that this region is still so neglected is so utterly shameless.
