U.S. has lot `to teach the world'
Nation started well, got better, Cheney said

Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, urged 40 children at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Tuesday to study American history for the good of themselves and their country.

"We have a lot to teach ourselves, but we also have a lot to teach the world," Cheney said, flanked by American flags and poster-sized drawings of the Washington Monument and Liberty Bell.

...

Cheney shared excerpts from the first of her three children's history books, "America: A Patriotic Primer." She told the crowd of fourth through eighth graders from the YMCA Youth Center not to think of history as a scattered handful of events, but as a story.

...

"Telling the truth is one of better things people who have changed our history have done."

1. Why would they send that woman to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute?
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 08:44 AM by marmar
She of the husband who voted against making MLK Day a holiday? The kids are probably still traumatized by that scary woman's visit.

9. He also voted against lifting sanctions to South Africa
And against a resolution calling for the release of Nelson Mandela.

She shouldn't have been allowed to have come with 100 feet of their doors.

3. we also have a lot to teach the world
Now of course the world has nothing to teach us because, we already know everthing that is worth knowing.

This is what is sending America down the toilet.

10. It seems that the moments in history
that our country actually WAS a beacon of liberty and an example to the world that we could all be proud of are getting farther and farther away. We should prostrate ourselves before the world and ask forgiveness for our destructive national hubris, and hopefully tell them that we're under new management and we hope they'll give us another shot.

11. Arrogance, Brutality, Bullying, Cheating, Denial, Eleteism
And that's only getting to the "E's"

Lynne, clean up your own back yard. AND I seem to remember this (since you claim to be a Born Again, this should ring a bell):

Matt.7
<3> And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
<4> Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
<5> Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

I think that's from the Bible..?

27. American exceptionaliasm is dangerous
God did not "choose" America for some special mission in the service of mankind. God did not make America "special". America is merely one nation in the annals of history, a nation that has done some good things and some bad things, but one nation among many, each of which has something to teach the world and something to learn from it.

looks like we will have to learn a lot from the world once the people who have accaparated the power here, including the author of this amazingly pretentious statement, will be gone.

33. Ha! You want some history...
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 08:16 PM by teknomanzer
The United States is a nation built on

slavery (Africans sold as chattel)

genocide (Native American slaughtered and driven from their lands)

aggressive expansionism (Manifest Destiny envisioned in the Mexican War, Indian Wars, Spanish American War)

and economic exploitation (Wars and intervention in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and some other places I'm probably not even aware of.)

These are the indisputable facts. The United States has a history similar to many of the great powers of the World. How naive it is to believe that a superpower is made through beatific acts, and global tragedies that through some miracle have worked in our favor.

Once you accept these facts you have some real choices to make. One is to embrace our empire and continue along the path of dirty deeds and realpolitik (Join with Cheney and his minions,) or find a way for truth and reconciliation.

However, if you dismiss these facts you forfeit any choice. You can do nothing more than perpetuate the idiotic fallacy of the Goodly nation of America.

You want some cold hard truth. Given our history, the invasion of Iraq is not necessarily out of character with US policy. Perhaps the only thing you can say about it is how blatant an act it was, and how obvious the lies are to the rest of the world (why it wasn't so obvious to the citizens of the US is a tribute to our education's method of indoctrination.) The empire is now so great that we are getting past the point of pretense. Once that becomes so you can be sure the Republic will be no more. Kiss the last vestiges of your freedom goodbye, and hope for the swift decline of an empire.

All I can say is you better start slapping people upside the head and take the reigns of this democracy before its all gone.

(on edit: spelling, grammar, punctuation, spit.)
