U.S. working to reduce civilian casualties in Iraq
Knight Ridder Newspapers

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The death of civilians at the hands of U.S. troops has fueled the insurgency in Iraq, according to a top-level U.S. military commander, who said U.S. officials began keeping records of these deaths last summer.

Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, who as head of the Multinational Corps Iraq is the No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq, said the number of civilian dead and wounded is an important measurement of how effectively U.S. forces are interacting with the Iraqi people.

"We have people who were on the fence or supported us who in the last two years or three years have in fact decided to strike out against us. And you have to ask: Why is that? And I would argue in many instances we are our own worst enemy," Chiarelli told Knight Ridder.

Chiarelli said he reviews the figures daily. If fewer civilians are killed, "I think that will make our soldiers safer," Chiarelli said.

5. I guess we will have to look at beheading vs. phosphorus bombs
We may see the results and our hair stands on end with the few beheading but I am sure the Iraq people see the results of the phosphorus and other types of bombs more. Hard to win that one in both places. Some times it is luck that puts a country is a place that has no civilian killed like us in WW1 vs. the rest of the world. Look how we acted with the 3000 deaths on 911 and just put the rest of the world in that place and one can almost understand their not seeing us or us them in a true light.

2. And it only took them three years to figure that out.
I guess if someone killed your kids, Lt. Chiarelli, you might resent it too :eyes:

4. Newsflash: most people killed in Iraq have families.
Even if the US labels dead Iraqis as 'insurgents' or whatever, their soldiers may still not be safer.

Plus, the military routinely refuses to admit the Iraqis blown to hell in houses were women and children.

If fewer civilians are killed, "I think that will make our soldiers safer

7. But, I thought we didn't count civilian deaths...
What the Pentagon learns through blood and treasure they could have learned by reading DU way back when they first started spouting vile hatred for the Iraqis. How long have we been saying that ignoring Iraqi civilian deaths was a fatal mistake? (pun intended)
