Cheney Assails Press on Report on Bank Data

WASHINGTON, June 23 — Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday vigorously defended a secret program that examines banking records of Americans and others in a vast international database, and harshly criticized the news media for disclosing an operation he said was legal and "absolutely essential" to fighting terrorism.

"What I find most disturbing about these stories is the fact that some of the news media take it upon themselves to disclose vital national security programs, thereby making it more difficult for us to prevent future attacks against the American people," Mr. Cheney said, in impromptu remarks at a fund-raising luncheon for a Republican Congressional candidate in Chicago. "That offends me."

...

Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he had sent letters on Friday to both Treasury Secretary John W. Snow and Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales on the issue. While he declined to release the letters, he said he was concerned about the legal authority for the operation.

...

"Why does it take a newspaper investigation to get them to comply with the law?" the senator asked. "That's a big, important point."

4. Note: Mr. Specter why does it take public outcry
to get you to do your job. Part of the problem of this administration has always been lack
of oversight by the Congress. It is your sworn duty to protect and defend the constitution
of the United States, a duty that you have neglected due to partisan bias.

Not very clever at all...

14. A mad tea party/page 51-Alice in Wonderland/Lewis Carroll
"Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?" said the March Hare
"Exactly so," said Alice.
"Then you should say what you mean," the March Hare went on.
"I do," Alice hastily replied; "at least-at least I mean what I say-that's the same thing, you
know."
"Not the same thing at all a bit!" said the Hatter. "Why you might just as well say that "I
see what I eat" is the same thing as "I eat what I see."
"You might just as well say," added the March Hare, "that I like what I get" is the same
thing as "I get what I like."

Ps I always thought the March Hare and the Mad Hatter were politicians

6. As my clinical-psychologist friend just said to me tonight ..
"Cheney appears to be a psychopath." And, yes, this retired social worker agrees with THAT assessment, in the sense that he is sans a conscience, and says and does the most outrageous things without any empathy or subsequent remorse. He is the most arrogant person I've ever observed. I look at my nine-year-old daughter and cry thinking about the world we're leaving to her (and the horrible influence Darth Cheney had on it).

Interesting suppression of his own homicidal impulses. One wonders where and how he lived as a kid.

32. Well, yes, that's just it!
I read "The Rise and Rise of Richard B. Cheney," and he seemed to have had a normal childhood with progressively-minded parents; but I know that there's some critical information missing there. I wonder if he's like a relative of mine ... so self-involved, considering himself to be the center of the world, that he is incapable of seeing the world through someone else's eyes.

31. I've read that Dick Cheney has some type of autism.
He is absolutely incapable of feeling empathy for anyone. There is some kind of disconnect in his brain. Don't know which part. Buy one thing is for sure: this man is probably THE most hated man we have ever had in the White House. Ever.

His ratings have been consistently about 19% over the past few years. Cheney knows it, he doesn't care. After the shooting incident, his ratings dropped down to - around 9%. Just unbelivable. They could have put Ted Bundy in there and he would have had better ratings.

9. Since it's OK to leak the name of undercover CIA agents...
it should be OK to disclose all of the government's covert operations. I'm not a fan of government secrecy anyway. It's very elitist and undemocratic.

12. We recorded PBS's Frontline program from a few nights ago, and.
watched it last night.

Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld should both rot in jail for the rest of their lives for planning the most heinous crimes against world humanity.

I could not despise them more than I do now, pulling the strings on a puppet president without a real brain in his head.

25. I love Frontline.
Isn't it interesting how little time in the show was spent on Bush as a part of any of the decision making? The guy is an empty vessel, offering nothing to the argument and nothing to the political discussion. Unbelievable. And Cheney is an absolute nightmare. An absolute nightmare. Cheney is "offended" by a government by, for and of the people??? He can go screw himself!

15. Wasn't Bush lecturing on "non-transparent regimes" this week?
He said this week "It should make people nervous when non-transparent regimes who have announced they have nuclear warheads, fire missiles. This is not the way you conduct business in the world."

So Bush is lecturing the international community on "non-transparent regimes" but yet Cheney says he's "offended" that the news media would dare report on the inner workings of our government!

24. we're being "SWIFTED"
part of the FEAR and SMEAR tactics:

SMEAR opponents via SWIFT-boating tactics

Ramp up the fear factor - i.e. "we need to spy on you because there might be a terrorist out there" - Swift-banking

It occured to me last night while watching the news - just how timely the latest "terrorist roundup" is coming on the heels of this latest invasion of our privacy.

the headlines are screaming about "HOME GROWN" Terrorists. Underlying implication is that your NEIGHBOR may be a terrorist, a co-worker may be a terrorists, the school-crossing guard may be a terrorist, the crazy cat lady down the street may be a terrorist and the newspaper delivery person may be wrapping homegrown IEDs in those morning papers.

TERROR TERROR EVERYWHERE and who can you trust? That's why the pResident is working hard to spy on everyone because we don't know WHO the terrorists are, where they are hiding and what they may do next!

Orange alerts do not work well anymore to get the sheeple flocking behind the bushes. parading an Al-Qeada leader's head did not garner more than a couple approval points. the usual booga-booga terror 'alerts' go unnoticed.

But make you fear your NEIGHBOR - big headlines
