Scientists OK Gore's movie for accuracy
WASHINGTON - The nation's top climate scientists are giving "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore's documentary on global warming, five stars for accuracy.

The former vice president's movie — replete with the prospect of a flooded New York City, an inundated Florida, more and nastier hurricanes, worsening droughts, retreating glaciers and disappearing ice sheets — mostly got the science right, said all 19 climate scientists who had seen the movie or read the book and answered questions from The Associated Press.

The AP contacted more than 100 top climate researchers by e-mail and phone for their opinion. Among those contacted were vocal skeptics of climate change theory. Most scientists had not seen the movie, which is in limited release, or read the book.

But those who have seen it had the same general impression: Gore conveyed the science correctly; the world is getting hotter and it is a manmade catastrophe-in-the-making caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

2. Nothing more than liberal propaganda
Al Gore, who served in Vietnam merely for political purposes blathers on about all this global warming nonsense. Hold on a minute while I cherry pick in the bible and find something that disputes this nonsense. Who the fuck wants to know shit when you can meander through life believing shit?

18. Of course reality has a liberal bias.
Edited on Mon Jul-03-06 11:28 AM by ronnie624
Liberals and progressives, generally speaking, place far greater value on the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.

Conservatives on the other hand are more prone to clinging to tradition and seeking comfort in the past even if it means rejecting sound scientific data and lying to themselves in order to find that comfort. Such a view of the world is not conducive to any kind of accurate interpretation of reality. Surely this is obvious.

Do you see the matter differently?

That's why they push the myth of global warming.

That's what Stossel would say.

15. Just saw the movie tonite, very moving
parts of it really stun you, the melting glaciers, the dissappearing lakes, the paradoxes, the facts about the data collected over 650,000 thousand years and how CO2 emissions never exceeded 300ppm, but now have sky rocketed to over 600ppm and climbing!!!!

It's serious and alot of very bad things will happen before big legislative and industrial changes are forced into action.

21. This should be standard, required viewing in all science classes.
Politics (er, eh, polluted politics, that is) won't allow it, but this is essential information for the mindset of today's youth. Today's grown-ups can choose to ignore it too, but it won't go away.

It's like Health class for Planet Earth.

Great movie--not the least bit entertaining, but a must for every human.

22. Just saw the movie this weekend............
very, very unnerving because of the facts. If I were a younger person I would be seriously considering not having children. They will have to face the awful consequences of what previous generations did or didn't do.

Al Gore is a true hero for the years of work he has put in trying to convey this message to the braindead, American Idol addicts, who can't be bothered learning even the basics of something so important.

We truly need to rely more on mass transit and alternative energy.

23. I've been teaching environmental science classes for more than a decade
... and Gore's approach is superb. He explains how the greenhouse effect works in about 3 minutes (it usually takes me a period and a half!). I especially like how he managed to work in some of the most recent findings, like the Greenland ice deterioration, and the updated 650,000-year temperature/CO2 record (which was only published a year or two ago). The textbook we are using isn't as up to date!

His book also discusses the troubling increase in acidification, in the Pacific Ocean ... this is something which even my supervisor (who does global environmental change work for the UN Environment Programme) was not alerted to until fairly recently. I am meeting with him later this week, and I'm certain that using Gore's movie and/or book in his new course will come up -- Gore contacted his office last year, asking for some satellite imagery.

The author of the article you posted, Dr. Richard Lindzen charged "oil and coal interests $2,500 a day for his consulting services; and his 1991 trip to testify before a Senate committee was paid for by Western Fuels and a speech he wrote, entitled 'Global Warming: the Origin and Nature of Alleged Scientific Consensus,' was underwritten by OPEC.

In November 2004, climate change skeptic Richard Lindzen was quoted saying he'd be willing to bet that the earth's climate will be cooler in 20 years than it is today. When British climate researcher James Annan contacted him, however, Lindzen would only agree to take the bet if Annan offered a 50-to-1 payout. :spray:
