Specter considers suing over signing statements

WASHINGTON — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said Tuesday that he is "seriously considering" filing legislation to give Congress legal standing to sue President Bush over his use of signing statements to reserve the right to bypass laws.

Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, made his comments after a Judiciary Committee hearing on signing statements, which are official documents that Bush has used when signing legislation to challenge the constitutionality of more than 750 laws.

Bush has issued more signing statements than all previous presidents combined. But he has never vetoed a bill, depriving Congress of any chance to override his judgment. If Congress had the power to sue Bush, Specter said, the Supreme Court could determine whether the president's objections are valid under the Constitution.

"There is a sense that the president has taken the signing statements far beyond the customary purviews," Specter said at the hearing.

7. I agree. all blather and bluster, no real action.
I'm starting to think he's an intentional Rove plant -- sounds like upholding accountability so they can point and say "see, republicans are not all bad", but in the end there's no difference whatsoever.

Reminds of me and my sisters growing up: volunteer to wash the dishes as someone is just finishing. You get brownie points for offering, but you don't really have to do anything.

3. Arlen gets more and more ridiculous with each passing blustery rant.
Stomp Feet, Stomp Feet, bluster, bluster...but when the dust clears, the status quo remains and Arlen continues to do nothing.

5. A sure thing for Bush if the SC is involved..
Specter herding the masses through the livestock pens
boxing them in for the fatal Supreme Court blow.

Behold, where is the admonishment and disdain from Specter
castigating the president for an outright power grab?

what he should do after all.

Trying to get credit from all ends. As I said about his last move: I'll believe it when I see it happen.

8. Bwahahahahaha!!!
Thanks for my morning laugh! So, old Snarlin' Arlen is stamping his little feet and once again making empty threats to hold this corrupt administration accountable? And when it's time to do something, he folds faster than Superman on laundry day and another dozen soldiers and another five dozen civilians die in Iraq and Afghanistan while at home our rights are rolled back a little bit more.

Wait, that's not funny.

15. I'm not just considering this........
I'm really really really think hard and harder and hardest about really seriously definitely maybe and strongly considering the possibility of the fact that when the wind is blowing the right way on a certain day say sometime after 1:33 PM in a certain sector of the galaxy perhaps the seriousness of the consideration that is really really being considered will be considered a bit more but not until after dinner and a nap!

18. I've always wondered why there is this wrinkly mess around
Bush's wallet pocket. it is where Specter places his liver-lips when he kisses Bush's ass.
Specter talks the talk when the camera lights are on, then he sucks the big salami afterward.

people need to be asking THESE polititians: Why do YOU hate America?

19. What does he want now?
He was making a lot of noise after * stole his first election. It got so bad that the Repuke were talking of not allowing him to be the chair of the Judiciary Committee. Then Arlen had some backroom meetings and promised not to oppose any anti-women's rights judges that Shrub would want on the SC. The Repukes then made him chairman and he settled down.

This seems to be a pattern with Arlen. Have a tantrum, make a lot of noise. Then the Repukes offer him something that he wants not to make good with his threats. It is like a spoiled brat that does a fit and the parents give him what he wants so that he will shut up.

20. This is brilliant! Arlen sues Bush and it goes to one of Bush's
right wing judges that Arlen helped put on the bench and the judge throws it out. Arlen can then say "see, I weely weely tried to hold Bush accountable but those activist courts threw it out." Okay so it's not brilliant. Actually, it's pretty effing pathetic that this is how Congress holds oversight of the Executive branch-by sueing them. :eyes: :banghead: :puke: :wtf: :argh: I want my country back!

We need a bi-partisan uproar, and only impeachment hearings might send a message to these thugs.
