US general: Strong, sophisticated Taliban emerging

Taliban forces fighting U.S. troops in Afghanistan have grown stronger and more sophisticated, and are directing operations from neighboring Pakistan, a senior U.S. commander said on Wednesday.

More than four years into the war in Afghanistan, an operation often overshadowed by the focus on Iraq, the top U.S. commander there said the Taliban has grown in the south and reconstituted itself elsewhere. It is displaying better military command and its leaders remain elusive, he said.

"The fact remains that we're up against an enemy that is able to operate very effectively on both sides of the border," Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry said in testimony to U.S. lawmakers. "There's areas that they're able to stay within and to direct combat operations against ourselves and against the Afghan National Army."

Despite growing violence funded, U.S. officials say, by drug money, NATO will take over military operations in southern Afghanistan in July, according to Mary Beth Long, the Defense Department's principal deputy assistant secretary for international security affairs...(more@ link including NATO)

2. Needless to say, this wasn't supposed to happen. However,

it was inevitable. So much for jr's doctrine of "democratizing" the region in order to bring peace.

3. make sure to take enough antibiotics for long enough. Evolution.
If you have an infection and don't take your antibiotics long enough or in enough strength, the reistant bacteria will multiply and there you are. Not saying that any of us are any particular players, but it reminds me of this.

4. We have always underestimated our enemies.
Our leaders love to portray them as " backward warlords"..... They have been at war for thousands of years with many adversaries, and they know a little something about their own terrain and customs..

When we fight an unfamiliar enemy on his own turf...we lose.. (even if we "win"..)

And what about Pakistan? They claim to be OUR pal..what gives there?? Oh wait.. they are our PAID friend, and maybe they see us running out of patience and money... They have fought a few tough wars as well, and are quite an old civilization.. methinks we have been snookered..

5. pakistan has limited resources especially since
the earthquake.

they worry about india{which is pulling away rapidly} -- they worry about conservative muslims.

mushareff can't last forever and he knows it.

we have let afghanistan down by not spending enough on infrastructure in that country and helping rebuild their economy.

in short -- we are screwed.

9. Soviet Union spent 10 years trying to control Afghanistan - the SU died .
.
.
.

The "union" broke up into a whole bunch of uncoordinated neighbors

SO

Maybe the whole United States of America will break into something like "The South" and a whole lot of friendly "countries" to our southern border??

Wishful thinking,

I know . . .

(sigh)

10. That's what happens when you pretend dispersing your enemy = victory
They regroup & come back stronger than ever and with new recruits.

Osama is the only one entitled to say "Mission Accomplished." He got Bush to focus our strength in Iraq and throw our money into a bottomless pit.
