U.S. losing terror war because of Iraq, poll says

WASHINGTON — The United States is losing its fight against terrorism and the Iraq war is the biggest reason why, more than eight of ten American terrorism and national security experts concluded in a poll released yesterday.

One participant in the survey, a former CIA official who described himself as a conservative Republican, said the war in Iraq has provided global terrorist groups with a recruiting bonanza, a valuable training ground and a strategic beachhead at the crossroads of the oil-rich Persian Gulf and Turkey, the traditional land bridge linking the Middle East to Europe.

"The war in Iraq broke our back in the war on terror," said the former official, Michael Scheuer, the author of Imperial Hubris, a popular book highly critical of the Bush administration’s anti-terrorism efforts. "It has made everything more difficult and the threat more existential."

Scheuer, a former counterterrorism expert with the CIA, is one of more than 100 national security and terrorism analysts who were surveyed this spring for the nonscientific poll by Foreign Policy magazine and the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research group headed by John Podesta, who served as White House chief of staff in the Clinton administration.

1. We're losing 'terror war' because the concept is idiotic.. It is simply
a concoction designed to sell arms and to justify the invasion of countries we would like to invade, just like the 'war against communism' and the 'war against drugs'.

2. Even more than that ...
With those two wars, you have a target that's tangible.

With the "war on terror?" You're fighting an ideal. No matter how hard you try or how many people you kill, there are always going to be people in the future who have and embrace the thought you tried to exterminate.

13. Terrorism is a tactic which is nothing more than an idea
It's pretty much impossible to kill an idea once its time has come. It's like trying to unring a bell. Our military does better when it fights against a country with a uniformed army. That's what it has been training to do for about 230 years and that's what makes terrorism such a pain in the ass. If nothing else, we'll walk away from Iraq with a better understanding of this new art of war.

14. Terrorism is not at all new
It's been around since before civilization. This wahhabist form is a new flavor of terrorism, but the product is not new. We could deal with terrorism fairly well, too, if we just did it right. If we would have dealt with 9/11 as a criminal act and an international police action, we would not be in the awful spot we're in today.

5. I think that Osama is just a beard for
the people who actually took down the towers. It still seems to be more of an inside job than that of a man on a dialysis machine, living in a cave. Call me :tinfoilhat: lady if you will, but I say look in the nazi manifestos and you will see the roots of our war on terrorism. Oh, BTW, welcome to DU Acadia Blue :hi:

Bush needed the whole thing. it is strange how he is so un surprised and continues to read about a goat for how long???????

If Bush didn't plan it, he defiantly allowed it to happen. and it's funny how PENACers seemed to be planning this all along. It's almost as if the whole thing was set up by our government who thanks to Die Bold we can't get rid of. What a wart on the ass of humanity.

7. You can't declare war on "a tactic."
This is 1984 propaganda: We've always been at war ... we're winning ... chocolate rations are increasing."

Perpetual War is a sick perspective that keeps the populace paralyzed with fear. Being "at war" is not conducive to the USA promoting "stable governments."

The Executive Branch and their Republican Elected Enablers must cease and desist with this happy jingoistic horse shit! Nobody is buying it now. That is, "Fooling ALL the people SOME of the time" is over. All of 29% of our Country's backwash are loud and nasty BUT a clear MINORITY.

16. Bushco gave the war the wrong name...
they never had any intention of fighting terror, they wanted to invade Iraq from the start.
