US, Iraqi forces clash with Shi'ite militia

More BAQUBA, Iraq, June 29 (Reuters) - Iraqi and U.S. troops battled Shi'ite militiamen in a village northeast of Baghdad on Thursday, and witnesses and police said U.S. helicopters bombed orchards to flush out gunmen hiding in the palm groves.

Iraqi security officials said Iranian fighters had been captured in the fighting, in which the commander of an Iraqi quick reaction force and two soldiers were shot dead by a sniper. They did not say how the Iranians had been identified.

The U.S. military had no immediate comment.

Police said the fighting was still going on at 6 p.m. (1400 GMT) in the predominantly Shi'ite village of Khairnabat, 3 km (two miles) north of Baquba, capital of Diyala province. Local residents reported hearing shooting and explosions.

4. Calling them Iranians might be just a slur too.
I've heard Iraqi Sunnis like to call a lot of the Shiites "Iranians" because of a claim they immigrated to Iraq from Iran and therefore aren't "real Iraqis". Therefore the Sunnis are a higher percentage of "real Iraqis" than the UN says. That sort of thing.

So who knows at this point

7. I've heard that too
I've heard Sunni Arabs in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states refer to any Shiites as an "Iranian". The implication being that Shiite Arabs don't have pure Arab ethnicity.

8. Also, many Iraqis lived in refugee camps in Iran for years...
...and they picked up Iranian accents there.

I'm highly skeptical of claims that Iran has fighters in Iraq. They don't need fighters -- Iran largely controls the political system.

6. NYT says that the US is siding with Shia Militia in a revenge fight
...One local resident, Abdul Hadi al-Dulaimi, said that the village, which is mostly Sunni Arab, was being raided by Shiite policemen working with militiamen to take revenge for a recent suicide bombing. American troops were siding with the Shiites and had deployed aircraft and ground troops, Mr. Dulaimi said. The fighting raged into the night.

An American military spokesman in Baghdad, Maj. William Willhoite, said in the evening that "there is something going on up there," but had few further details.
...
Militiamen drove into Daliqiya looking for revenge today, said Mr. Dulaimi, 55, a date farmer. About 30 to 35 families live in the village, most of them Sunni Arabs from the Dulaimi or Ani tribes. The area is thick with date palm groves and orange orchards.

The fighting in the morning lasted for three hours, with Iraqi policemen aiding the militiamen, Mr. Dulaimi said in a telephone interview. Many of the villagers sent their wives and children outside the area during a pause in the fighting. The Shiite militiamen and Iraqi security forces returned in the evening with American forces and continued the attack, he said.

9. It's not the first such story and won't be the last.
Bad business for the US to get into, too
