McGovern wants troops out of Iraq
Associated Press

MITCHELL, S.D. - Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern says it's time for American military forces to leave Iraq. He said withdrawal should start before December and end by June 2007.

The 1972 Democratic presidential candidate outlines his plan in a book he co-authored called "Out Of Iraq: A Practical Plan For Disengagement Now."

McGovern said the insurgency in Iraq cannot be contained until American forces leave and decisions are left to the Iraqis.

"Nobody wants a foreign army policing their territory and their country," said McGovern. "Whatever good that we could accomplish there has already been done. We now need to bring our forces home, let this insurgency die down, and then do what we can to help rebuild a country that American weapons have done a lot to destroy."

1. The timeline is Kerry/Feingold
as is this:

6. Sure is!
The reason why Kerry and Feingold get so much flack (and perhaps this applies to the former senator, George McGovern as well) is because they are ahead of the curve on progressive issues.

2. McGovern was painted as weak militarily but he served as a B-24
bomber pilot in WWII. He flew 35 missions from Italy to Southern Europe and Germany. It was a very dangerous job and at least 1/3 of the crews did not make it back.

A journey into the wild blue yonder with WWII pilot George McGovern

INTERVIEW BY LYNN GREEN

For most Americans, the name George McGovern is inextricably linked to his 1972 presidential campaign, a race that ended in a crushing, landslide victory for Richard Nixon. But McGovern's life has other interesting chapters, and in his latest book, historian Stephen Ambrose describes one of them in vivid detail.

Thousands of young, eager volunteers lined up to be pilots during World War II, and The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany 1944-45 tells their story by focusing on one bomber, the Dakota Queen, its pilot George McGovern and its crew. McGovern, a South Dakota preacher's son, was a 19-year-old college sophomore when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He immediately volunteered for service and less than three years later was piloting one of the big, unwieldy B-24 Liberator bombers. Completing 35 missions over Europe, McGovern went on to earn a Distinguished Flying Cross for his service.

4. Good point! Apparently Chickenhawks were around maligning our
real American heroes even back then. Impressive military record. Thanks for posting.

5. Good for him for speaking out.
Out of Iraq has a familiar ring to it.

I wish more Dems would get on board with the sentiment.

7. There are still many voters who voted for Dick Nixon over this man
in the 1972 re-elect landslide... and only a few months before the first indictments were announced of Nixon Cabinet officials and associates suggesting that Nixon's people had mobilized arms of the federal government to act against its own citizens.

George McGovern is a good man. The U.S. electorate wasn't mature enough to support him when it counted.
