ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) Former White House adviser Claude Allen is negotiating with prosecutors in hopes of avoiding a trial on theft charges, according to his attorney.

Allen was to go on trial Friday for allegedly trying to make fraudulent returns worth at least $5,000 at Target and other stores.

But Montgomery County prosecutors and Allen's attorneys have agreed to postpone the trial while negotiations continue, according to Allen lawyer Gregory Craig. He would not elaborate on the talks.

Allen, 45, was one of President Bush's top domestic policy advisers in a $161,000-a-year job until he resigned in February, a month after he was arrested at a Target store in Gaithersburg.

2. Surprisingly seedy behavior for someone making $160K a year--
it seems so many in the * admin. are thieves in large AND small ways---just riddled with it.

4. My thoughts as well.
I would like to see one of us "negotiate" on a charge such as that.

All of my past "negotiating" has transpired in court.

5. it's amazing how this society has become mean
for those on the bottom, while the offenders on the top are given every courtesy and privilege.
Look and Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, who have been convicted and their sentencing has been delayed. All I can think of is Martha Stewart who went to jail much quicker for nothing as serious as what they did.

dismissing these silly little charges...."

Wouldn't that be sweet

6. The same way all charges are negotiated
This is our criminal justice system ... we rarely give out the maximum penalty.

9. Sadly, he is black. His behavior makes him just another Bushite, tho
Sad way to assimilate into the upper echelons of arrogance and power; however his class/status seems to be helping in his present difficulty. At the very least he should be able to pay for a fancy lawyer.

12. Think about it. A Bush aid negotiating with prosecutors? What could they

want from him? What information does he have that could aid any current federal casses? Is anyone in any prosecutors office gunning for Bush/Cheney?

I'd think that hypertension should be pervading the whitehouse about now.
