Goodyear workers plead for help from NASCAR fans

Lede: Goodyear workers want NASCAR fans to stand by their strike to keep jobs in America. Doug Cunningham has the story.

By Doug Cunningham

Fifteen thousand steelworkers on strike against Goodyear want NASCAR fans to support the strike because the fight is for American jobs against Goodyear’s plan to ship more tires into the U.S. from China. Sonia Loftin
Works at the Tyler, Texas plant that Goodyear wants to close.

: “Oh, we need their support bad, because we make the NASCAR tires and they have the temporary scabs in there making those tires at the moment. They’re tryin’ to take all the jobs overseas, over to China. We have to keep some jobs in America. We’re fighting for our future and everybody’s future. If they close our plant down in Tyler our economy – it’s going to hurt so many families. So many people are gonna lose, not just the people that work at Goodyear in Tyler.”

United Steelworkers members are taking their strike message to NASCAR fans, to Goodyear stores and to communities all over America – communities that Goodyear worker Ronnie Crane of Danville, Virginia says are being hurt by corporate greed shipping U.S. jobs overseas.

: “Whenever you don’t have jobs and even when people are just out of work - whether the plant is shut down or not – it affects the whole economy."

7. How to help the Goodyear strikers

Post a few flyers from this link. Talk about the strike and tire safety to everyone. Don't buy Goodyear brand tires until after the strike ends. Complaining to a Goodyear dealer wouldn't hurt either.

4. "NASCAR voters" don't give a shit about their own family's welfare...
...and voted for Bush. Why would they lift a finger for union workers.

Might as well ask Wal-Mart shoppers to spend two extra cents on a twelve pack of toilet paper at Target. Ain't gonna happen.

5. I think you may be surprised by Nascar people's response
I know it's supposed to be a bunch of "good ol' boys", but really, a lot of NASCAR fans are Union people and will support their brothers and sisters in other Unions. How do I know? I am a Union member. And I used to belong to the Steel Workers Union as well.

6. Baloney
That dog doesn't hunt when it comes to today's NASCAR fans including me. I support the Goodyear employees and all union members. Without legislation to beef up collective bargaining and labor laws we're all spinning our wheels.
