Baltimore mother receives discounted Venezuelan heating oil
Baltimore mother receives discounted Venezuelan heating oil
By ALEX DOMINGUEZ, The Associated Press
Dec 6, 2006 1:15 PM (3 hrs ago)

BALTIMORE - A 58-year-old disabled mother is the latest beneficiary of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' oil largesse.

Citgo Petroleum Corp., the U.S. subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, delivered discounted heating oil on Wednesday to Debra Henderson's Baltimore home, the first of 15,000 needy households in Maryland slated to receive more than 3 million gallons of discounted fuel.

Citgo is providing up to 200 gallons to each household at 40 percent discount.

The heating oil program is part of a promise by the country's socialist leader to aid America's poor. Along with poor homes, Citgo is also donating free oil to homeless shelters.

Nationally, Citgo said it will expand the program beyond the Northeast to provide oil at a 40 percent discount to more than 400,000 households in 16 states. It will more than double the amount of oil provided, from nearly 40 million gallons last winter to more than 100 million gallons for this winter.

block this from happening and provide federal funds to cover an even greater discount, say 50%, using oil from the strategic reserves.

11. Using oil wealth to his political advantage????
From an AP wire story this week
http://www.courant.com/news/nationworld/hc-venezuela1204.artdec04,0,5014324.story

<<Chavez also has used Venezuela's oil wealth to his political advantage. He has channeled oil profits toward multibillion-dollar programs for the poor, including subsidized food, free university education and cash benefits for single mothers.>>

To HIS political advantage? Unlike Dubya and his benevolent subsidies to Halliburton.

13. Isn't that odd? They've been hammering that message in US and British
news services. The right-wingers are DETERMINED to get him, one way or another.

No doubt they are wild with rage that his re-election was so easily won, and don't want him to finish his term, not by a long shot.

No doubt they are determined to try to wrest the government back and into the hands of the oligarchy which ran Venezuela so long, to the horrendous disadvantage of so many wretchedly poor people.

Welcome to D.U., Sisaruus. :hi: :hi: :hi:

14. Sounds as if he's committed to this!
A lot of people STILL haven't grasped the fact that Democratic Congressmen approached Venezuela in search of discounted heating oil for their poorer constituents, since the papers ALWAYS play it up as a publicity stunt by Hugo Chavez.

These people, and representatives of various Native American tribes had run into a brick wall trying to get help from American oil companies FIRST, well before they made arrangements with Venezuela.

The people using this discounted oil are very lucky their Democratic Representatives and Senators and local mayors kept trying and got this arrangement worked out for them.

28. Because I'm not a fan of demagoguery.
Here's one way to look at it: if he was really concerned about the poor, he'd be giving this to poorer nations. He does all sorts of things that I wouldn't approve of if Bush* or anyone here did them. I don't have to agree with everything someone does just because they're ostensibly left-wing.

There are at least 15 Carribean countries receiving discounted oil now.

If you want to read more about this arrangement(s), you'll find a lot to examine, looking at the "Caracas Accord" and the "San Jose Accord" information on the internetS.

45. Again, this is not a sensible argument.
You really are confused about why nations belong to OPEC? You think they'd be doing a favor to the poor by leaving OPEC and letting Chevron and Exxon get all the profits from oil.

Review everything you know about the Depression. FDR decided that the solution to the Depression would be to make sure the FARMERS made money from agriculture and not the retailers.

The sort of things that Chavez's followers say, the sort of tactics they use to try to convince people that he's a good guy, definitely don't help. I'm not endeared to a point of view by someone accusing me of being stupid or a stooge for right-wing interests.

Regardless of who he is or what he does, good or bad, it is very apparent that a cult of personality surrounds him.

26. From the "Now I've Heard Everything" Department:
U.S. Names Spy Chief for Cuba and Venezuela
Written by Cyril Mychalejko
Wednesday, 06 December 2006
U.S. "Intelligence Czar" John Negroponte appointed a former national security advisor for President Reagan as head of intelligence for Cuba and Venezuela on Nov. 27.

Norman Bailey, a Latin American specialist and Cold War expert, will be "mission manager" for the two countries, responsible for "leading the Intelligence Community at a strategic level, by integrating collection and analysis of data, identifying and filling gaps in intelligence and planning and ensuring the implementation of strategies."

Otto Reich, former assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere and an Iran-Contra affair alumnus (along with Negroponte), praised the former Mobil Oil Company employee as being "very knowledgeable."

''He understands political action, he understands public diplomacy, he understands the psychological aspects of the world we're in,'' Reich told The Miami Herald.

Norman Bailey appointed as new new Cuba mission manager against Cuba

Reich said that as a former senior director of international economic affairs at the White House National Security Council 1981-1983, Bailey played a key part crafting the Reagan administration policies widely credited with bringing down the former Soviet Union and ending the Cold War.

‘’He understands political action, he understands public diplomacy, he understands the psychological aspects of the world we’re in,’’ Reich said.

Bailey, who speaks five languages, is the author of a 1999 book, The Strategic Plan that Won the Cold War.

He also worked as an economist with Mobil Oil Company and was president of Overseas Equity, Inc., an international financial consulting firm.

He also served in the U.S. army, specializing in strategic intelligence and joint operational planning.

He graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1953 and holds a Masters of International Affairs and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

32. Thanks for the reference to the poor women in Uganda. Had never read that, yet. My God.
That money would have gone so far for them in their daily lives, as they have so very, very little.

(Also, a good reminder of the absolute villainy of the eternally returning proposals for a "flat tax" for this country)

As long as we don't bother the people who reap the major profits from the labor and struggling of others. Wouldn't be right for them to worry their "beautiful minds......." They need to have an unobstructed view of their serene, insulated futures.
