GOP heaps scorn on retiring Frist
WASHINGTON -- Just before the 109th Congress finally adjourned shortly before dawn Saturday, retiring Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist got some last-minute perks for his home state of Tennessee -- and took a rhetorical beating from his colleagues.

Some Republicans heaped scorn on Frist, faulting him for fostering runaway federal spending.

Late Friday night, House Appropriations Chairman Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., said icily in a speech on the House floor that Congress' failure to pass nine of 11 appropriations bills "should be placed squarely at the feet of the departing majority leader." The House passed its version of the bills, but the Senate did not.

Congress passed a stopgap spending bill that continues federal funding at current levels until mid-February.

Frist managed to stick some pork for the folks back home into the final bills passed, however.

An angry Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., a fiscal conservative and Budget Committee chairman, said: "This is being done by the Republican leadership to the Republican membership.

5. Really
Pot meet kettle. THe criticism rings pretty hollow, doesn't it? Guess they don't feel the need to make nice now that Frist won't be there and won't be the GOP's presidential frontrunner.

If he were running for President they'd be singing his praises.

3. "Republican" = "Can't be trusted to govern."
It's really that simple.

They should rename themselves "The Katrina Party," because nothing but misery, mis-steps and missed opportunity follows in their path.

4. Of course the Senate gets nothing done
60 votes for cloture.

One senator can hold up anything.

Frist may be the most ineffectual senate leader in my lifetime but now that it is our dysfunctional baby, I doubt we'll get much done either, unless the Rethugs roll over and play dead.

12. Nope they are cats
Each one concerned only about himself or herself and absolutely willing and able to throw anyone and everyone under the bus to hold onto power.

I think the great middle saw that and decided to throw em all under the bus.

9. Btw, re your poll. I stopped watching C-SPAN theater
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 12:43 AM by sfexpat2000
after about a year.

The call in shows are skewed to the right and the Congressional theater is nauseating. At some point, as a former actor/director, I realized that what I was watching was for the camera. They're not good enough performers to hold my attention.

11. As someone who has watched "Washington Journal"
for years, sadly, I believe you're correct about the quality of CSPAN's "Washington Journal". They're just not getting the guests they used to feature. (I guess the more knowledgeable people are all busy...appearing on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report).
Lately, with notable exceptions, we've been inudated with people of questionable credentials who have trouble answering the most elementary of questions from CSPAN viewers.
They all sound like Cheney: "I haven't read that so I can't comment." His stock answer for any question he doesn't want to answer. Which, these days, is every question he's asked.
