BBC: (UK airline) 'Bomb plot' terror charge dropped

'Bomb plot' terror charge dropped

A Pakistani judge has ruled there is not enough evidence to try a key suspect
in an alleged airline bomb plot on terrorism charges.

He has moved the case of Rashid Rauf from an anti-terrorism court to a regular
court, where he faces lesser charges such as forgery.

Pakistan has presented Mr Rauf as one of the ringleaders behind a plan to blow up
flights out of London.

The British authorities say they foiled it with Pakistan's help in August.

1. Is this the case that ShrubCo insisted that London arrest a group
of guys EARLY, before anyone had purchased any airline tickets or passports, because it was politically favorable?

7. I believe so, yes
The plot to mix liquid chemicals into rocket fuel, using a process that requires a laboratory and could not be done in an airplane washroom anyway.

3. As he's the ringleader
he's probably a double-agent. More useful to keep him in circulation in case he's needed again.

12. Funny how you'd think some people here would know better
but the very next "plot" will have the same people on the thread, clamoring to indict, convict, and execute people called "terrorists" by a lying, self-serving government.

5. But we still must put our 3 ounces of liquids in a 1 quart baggie
and have our pants fall down walking through the metal detectors after waiting 2 hours in a line of sweaty smelly assholes.

I swear, someday, I am just going to let my pant drop when I have to remove my belt for the security check point, maybe I will not wear any underwear that day.

8. NOT FAIR! I got all excited because I thought it was Friday!
They usually try to hide these things on a Friday news dump. But that procedure's been somewhat "shaky" since the election, hasn't it?

Pakistan court drops charge in London plot case

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A Pakistani court dropped terrorism charges on Wednesday against a Pakistani-British dual national who was suspected of being a key figure in a plot to blow up airliners over the Atlantic Ocean, his lawyer said.

British police said in August they had foiled a plot to carry out suicide bombings on flights from London to the United States.

Days later, Pakistan announced it had arrested a "key person" in the plot, Rashid Rauf, who a Pakistani official said had been in contact with an al Qaeda operative in Afghanistan.

Rauf's lawyer, Hashmat Habib, said an anti-terrorism court had found no evidence of terrorism against the suspect.

...

Rauf still faced other charges, including impersonation, forging documents and possessing explosives, which a civil court would deal with, he said.
