iPhone surprises technology world (BBC) {NOT from Apple}

A net phone called the iPhone has been launched by Linksys just weeks before analysts were expecting Apple to release a similarly-named device.

The wireless iPhone allows users to make free or low-cost internet phone calls using the Skype service.

It joins a growing market of phones which use wi-fi to make telephone calls instead of traditional mobile networks.

There has been intense speculation about Apple entering the mobile market for the last few months.

Wireless net telephones are growing in popularity because they offer a low-cost alternative to making mobile phone calls.

10. No, in fact Apple doesn't own the trademark "iPhone" in America...
so it won't be called that. If the rumors are true, Apple has been developing this thing for years now. They would certainly not do something like that.

Apple is (or would) most likely not make a name as obvious as that for a phone, mainly because I'm quite sure they will be trying to identify it as something 'more' than a phone. iCom or iTalk or some such thing would be more likely. They didn't call the iPod 'iMusic' or the iSight 'iCamera' etc...

Not only that, even if they were - they could go w/ their new paradigm and call it simply the 'Mac Phone'

Apple may have a niche with it's iPod but treading into a already saturated market with only a marginally inventive product sounds like quicksand

11. It doesn't.
Witness the one I cited above: "iTalk" by Griffin Technologies. It's just that "iPhone" was the nickname a lot of the geek press were using to refer to Apple's upcoming VoIP WiFi Phone.

If you've never heard of it before- waste no time in going to www.skype.com and checking it out.

"The World talks for free".

Americans automatically think- "If there isn't a multi-national conglomerate reaming me for its services- the product MUST suck!"
