White House: No fight with Joint Chiefs

By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer 17 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The White House said Tuesday that increasing U.S. troops in
Iraq is an option under consideration and denied that there are differences with the Joint Chiefs of Staff over that idea.

White House press secretary Tony Snow emphasized that no decisions have been made about changing U.S. policy in Iraq.

"There's an assumption that people have been given marching orders, and at this point, the president is asking folks to take a look at a number of things," Snow said.

"I think people are trying to create a fight between the president and the Joint Chiefs when one does not exist," Snow said at a White House briefing. He would not disclose if Bush was leaning one way or the other about increasing troops in Iraq or a new direction in U.S. policy. According to some accounts, the White House is pushing the idea of a surge in troops and the Joint Chiefs oppose it.

The White House has said Bush will announce his decisions in January.

1. These reports make me wonder if that's why Powell made an appearance
He talked about his sources at the Pentagon. Shades of Murtha who started speaking for the military because they couldn't come out and publicly say things?

5. Could be a case for watching out
for any members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff having to quit their jobs suddenly for whatever reason, sex scandal, 'more time with the family', etc.

6. An anonymous spokesman...
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 11:41 AM by MGKrebs
"The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said military officers have not directly opposed a surge option. "I've never heard them be depicted that way to the president," the official said. "Because they ask questions about what the mission would be doesn't mean they don't support it. Those are the kinds of questions the president wants his military planners to be asking."

In other words, the military can't possibly oppose the plan because they don't even know what the mission is yet!

How could they not know what the mission is by now???

I think they do know A mission, this plan just doesn't fit into it.

7. They are spinning to the Generals
Ever see someone show up for a meeting completely unprepared and stammer and joke to kill time? That sounds like what they are doing.

They don't know the mission because the mission changed, from the other mission that they never really stated.

8. thats proof enough for me that there IS dissention.
'in the ranks' as it were. IF tony snowjob wasn't such a 'true believer' he might be able to lie somewhat better than he has been i think. his 'passion' (read: genuine rage) is just too desperate to be believed.
