Attorney admonished for statements on Libby
Wilson lawyer predicted jury could find V.P.'s former chief of staff guilty

WASHINGTON - A federal judge strongly admonished an attorney for former ambassador Joseph Wilson for her appearance yesterday on MSNBC's program "Hardball" where she predicted a jury can find I Lewis "Scooter" Libby guilty of making false statements.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton writes in an opinion today, "the Court would not tolerate this case being tried in the media."

Melanie Sloan, who is representing Wilson and his wife Valerie Plame in a civil suit against Libby, was asked by Chris Matthews if she thought Libby could still found guilty of perjury and obstruction charges - in the upcoming CIA/Leak trial - even though he may not have been the first person to reveal Palme's name.

Sloan told Matthews, "I think a jury could easily still find him guilty without being the first to leak because that`s not what he`s been charged with. He`s not charge with leaking. He`s charged with making false statements."

2. Idiot.
How many times does this have to happen before these lawyers get a clue?

3. I understand the judge saying she did not want the case tried in the
media, but shouldn't she also have chastized Matthews & MSNBC? I listened to that interview, and Sloan was mainly talking about fighting the subpoenaWilson had received because she believed it was Libby's atty's way of getting info to use in the civil case that he couldn't get any other way. It was Chris who kept pushing for her opinions on the Libby Fed case!

8. Matthews was doing his "job"; the lawyer absolutely knows better.
15 minutes of fame and all that... It's moronic for her to make this sort of gaffe and jeopardize the case.

4. Free speech doesn't apply to lawyers?
Can she offer her opinion on Roe Vs. Wade for instance, or is that banned too?

5. She's
She's an attorney who potentially could appear before that court and provide testimony. As far as I know, Matthews won't be appearing. First Amendment doesn't apply in this case.

10. But that's the whole point, Wilson isn't and shouldn't be involved..
in the Libby trial. Libby isn't on trial for outing Wilson's wife.

13. Chris Matthews is a potential witness
since he was one of the journalists involved in the leak and was questioned by the Grand Jury that indicted Libby.

6. If the Judge doesn't want this case tried in the media she
should have gotten busy a long time ago. In recent memory, all high profile cases have been tried in the media - starting with the attorneys for both sides. Seems to me this Judge is way out of line, likely partisan and full of herself.

Being the good team player. That was not trying the case in the media. It was correcting a false statement.

14. How is saying he could be found guilty equivalent to trying the case in the media??
The indictment is not a trial and it is proof positive that Libby 'could' be found guilty.
