Bush Makes Christmas Eve Calls to Troops

Associated Press 12.24.06, 12:21 PM ET

President Bush, who is spending Christmas at the Camp David presidential retreat, called 10 members of the U.S. military on Sunday to thank them for their service and wish them a happy holiday.

During the calls, which were placed to troops stationed overseas or have recently returned from deployments abroad before 8 a.m. EST, the president asked about the status of troop morale, said deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino.

"He said he wanted to call to let them know how much he appreciates their service and how proud he is of each of them," she said. "He asked them to please pass on his thanks to the men and women they serve with, and to give his best, on this Christmas, to their families."

Bush called the following servicemen and women: Army Sgt. Jonathan J. Corell, who has been serving in Afghanistan for 18 months. He has advanced skills in assault weaponry, which he uses while scouting and patrolling. His wife, Danielle, lives in Syracuse, N.Y.

2. That would require him actually feeling some sort of sorrow.
Besides - it's probably better that he doesn't anyway.

I mean, if you lost YOUR son or daughter in Bush's ill-begotten war, would you really want a call from the murderer himself - on Christmas Eve no less?

"Well son, you see, I've got this pretty sweet spread set up here for the Mrs. and me, so you go on now and be a good soldier, and Uncle George will see to it that you return home soon."

8. Enclosed in a Cardboard Box with DOD Seal and Printed on Flag
Yep, that's the packing material for the casket bringing the body home.

From a beautiful sad story in the Rocky Mountain News of a Navy Corpsman bringing home the body of his friend.

In cardboard box, a casket

Underneath a whining jet engine near the rear cargo hold, baggage workers lifted the tarp on a cart, and the sailor swallowed hard. He checked to see if the name on the cardboard box matched that of his best friend.

An American flag was printed atop the box, which encased the polished hardwood casket, protecting it during transit from Dover Air Force Base to the airport, and then to Denver, where the box would be removed before anyone saw it. On each end, the box was stamped with a large official seal of the Department of Defense.

5. Uh huh...sure.
"...the president asked about the status of troop morale, said deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino."
(emphasis mine)

How much do you want to bet that these recipients were either screened or ordered to give Bush a glowing report on morale?

"SIR! We are engaged in a military exercise in futility and we are getting killed and maimed in order to line your pockets you egomaniacal bastard SIR!"?
