U.S., Iran praise execution of Saddam
LONDON - Saddam Hussein's execution found the United States and
Iran sharing rare common ground on Saturday, with both countries saying the hanging of the former dictator was in the best interest of
Iraq, its people and the region.

(snip)

Elsewhere in the world, Saddam's execution was greeted with support in some corners but also with a degree of concern about the use of capital punishment, which is viewed with disdain in Europe.

In Italy, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who had staunchly backed the U.S.-led war in Iraq and sent Italian troops to fight, called the hanging "a step backward in Iraq's difficult road toward full democracy."

"The civilization in the name of which my country decided to send Italian soldiers into Iraq envisioned overcoming the death penalty, even for a bloody dictator like Saddam," he said.

4. That should tell us something.
But it won't. The fundaloons in Iran are a mirror to the fundaloons here, their fundaloon president even understands that, but we don't get it. Americans have always been a bit short on the introspection thing.

9. I get it. Getting rid of secular butchers so that fundie butchers
can have their way with the citizenry just makes good sense. ;)

6. Well, OBL is, of course, a Sunni religious extremist and Iran is
run by Shia religious extremists, but if the enemy of their enemy is their friend...

They both hated Saddam because he was a secular leader, who only in the last years of his reign began playing up to the religious factions with a spate of mosque building - IOW, he was losing his grip anyway and the invasion was about as appropriate as an invasion of E Gernamy in 1989 would have been.

8. So Bush did Iran's bidding again
That's nice. I bet Bin Laden is fine with seeing his old enemy Saddam Hussein dead as well.

11. Iran is the big victor in this war
We have eliminated (and at great cost) Iran's greatest enemy. When we finally drag our whipped asses
home from Iraq, it will be Tehran who gleefully step in and fill the vacuum. And this time the invaders
really will be greeted with flowers and crowds of happy people.

The vast scope of Bush's incredible Iraq failures will take years to sink in here in America.

12. Iran's statement says it all...
From wikipedia collection of quotes from various countries:

..."With regard to Saddam's execution, it amounts to a victory of the Iraqi people as they were the winners of his fall <...> Saddam's regime was overthrown because the Iraqi people did not support him. It is crystal clear that the United States should not misinterpret his fall and take the credit to itself. <...> Investigation into the Iraqi invasion in Iran (1980-1988) and in Kuwait (1990) could have disclosed the US involvement in Saddam's crimes and therefore the Americans preferred to close the case earlier."<40> - Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Reza Asefi.
