Source: New York Times

Steven Gilliard Jr., a political journalist who found his calling as a combative and influential blogger on the left, died on Saturday in Manhattan. He was 42.

He died after having been hospitalized at Lenox Hill Hospital since February because of heart and kidney failure, said his cousin Francine Smith, a spokeswoman for the family.

R.I.P. Steve. We miss you. It's good to see the NYT give Steve a full-fledged obit.

1. His was a remarkably insightful voice. . .
our world is smaller this week and our understanding of it dimmed. . .

I'm glad the NYT has given Steve his due.

2. Sad to say that I never read his blog...
Very sad to lose any progressive voice, especially one who seems to have been as involved as Steven was.

3. Steve
I was lucky enough to interact with Steve on another online community in the days before he was "Steve
Gilliard, blog genius". His was a very powerful voice for progressive causes. He was very funny,
articulate and always well-informed (sometimes to the nth detail on the most amazing array of topics).
He died way, way, way too young. :(

4. Steve was irreplaceable, and a huge huge loss to our cause
I'm glad that he was recognized by the NYT. No one deserved it more.

His blog was always the first and last site I read every day, and these past few months I've been in serious withdrawal pain. Even now, whenever something happens my initial reaction is to wonder what Gilliard would say about it.

I wish his site would open up to accept the last comments and (perhaps), to find another home for TNB community. It too was special.

5. Seeing that this morning
made me very happy. Steve and his work richly deserved this - and I hope it comforts his family somewhat to see this recognition.

6. Nice of the Times to give him some space at last
Maybe they can make room in future editions for some of the things that Gilliard was so right about and the Times was so wrong about?
