EXCLUSIVE: PROGRESSIVE LA TALK RADIO HOST TO BUY CINDY SHEEHAN PROPERTY IN CRAWFORD, TEXAS
Former TV News Anchor, Bree Walker, to Purchase 5-Acre 'Camp Casey' Property Near Bush Ranch

Will Keep Property Open to Public as 'Legacy for Peace'; Sheehan to Appear Live in Studio Walker's Program Saturday...

Former Los Angles newscaster turned progressive talk radio host, Bree Walker will be purchasing Cindy Sheehan's 5-acre property near the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas, The BRAD BLOG has learned.

Walker, currently a resident of San Diego, was previously a television news anchor in Los Angles and New York.

She told us moments ago that she intends to keep it "as a ground for freedom and peace" and is considering erecting a memorial there for troops killed in Iraq. She hopes to create a meditation garden on the property and keep it open to the public.

"I'm cashing out my capitalist corporate stocks and buying into a legacy of peace," Walker told The BRAD BLOG moments ago...

18. I haven't really heard much
of Bree Walker since I moved from San Diego in the late'80s except there was something on DU a few years ago about her and I can't remember what but it was something politically good.

That's great that you saw her at Women in Film events in LA..must have been very interesting!

6. Bree Walker's progressive? Fan-tastic!!
I know her mostly as one of the first on-camera media personalities with a disability (look closely at her hands). In fact, people (?) gave her crap when she decided to have children with Jim Lampley: "Why would you risk having children like that?" :grr: So now you know what they all were doing before there was such a thing as FR. :eyes:

13. Wonderful way to close out the day
So nice to come to DU tonight and get such good news!

I remember Bree Walker, too, from when she was in NY. I think she was on public television here. I always liked and admired her and it's quite gratifying to hear she's a progressive.

The meditation garden and memorial is a lovely, thoughtful idea. We so need something like this to counter the (ahem) "other" energies in that area.

Big thanks to Brad Blog for bringing us this development!

She is great. We just don't hear enough from her. Give her a couple of assistants to help her with research and she would be a powerhouse -- maybe another Randi. She has the spirit, the courage.

35. It's about history
Whether or not Bush continues to live on his makeshift ranch in Crawford, TX after his pResidency isn't important. The fact that he lived there IS, along with the fact that Cindy Sheehan waged a sustained anti-war protest as close as she could possibly get to him. Bush's ranch will be a historical site as well as Camp Casey. The significance of their close proximity to each other will not be lost among historians and future anti-war activists.

Who ever called Cindy Names; that sleezeball has a lot of apologizing to do. Certainly represent few of us on the real left. I hope Cindy knows that. And we all apologize for that creep's actions. Cindy , should she ever heal as much as possible; hope she will know many of us appreciate her efforts and miss her and hope we can find some joint efforts in the future.

37. Wooo-hoo!!! Homegirl made good!!

Here's her bio from Wikipedia. What an incredible lady!

Bree Walker (born February 26, 1953) is a well-known television network news anchor in San Diego, New York City, and Los Angeles. She was born with ectrodactyly. As an advocate for persons with disabilities, she is one of the first in her field to succeed in spite of a physical deformity.

Established and well into her career at the ABC affiliate KGTV Channel 10 in San Diego, Walker decided to go public with her ectrodactyly, a rare congenital deformity: her fingers and toes are fused together. She previously kept her deformed hands hidden inside a pair of glove-like prosthetic hands. With her hands now clearly visible, she continued her successful newscasting career at KGTV, moving up to the larger markets at WCBS Channel 2 in New York City, and in 1988 to KCBS Channel 2 Los Angeles.

Her media career started as an FM rock and roll disc jockey, on KUDL FM as "rock's lady of the night" in Kansas City in the middle 1970s. She soon after became New York City's first-ever female morning drive rock personality. She started her television career in 1980 at KGTV as a consumer advocacy reporter. She also dabbled in acting, appearing as herself in the end of the world SF thriller Without Warning and as television reporter Wendy Sorenson in The Chase, both in the early 1990s.

Her career took a surprising twist during the 2003 season when she watched the show Carnivàle, an HBO television series about a Depression-era carnival traveling through the Dust Bowl. She noticed that no cast member had ectrodactyly. She requested, created, auditioned, and won the role of Sabina, The Scorpion Lady.

Sabina appeared in three episodes during the 2005 season. She showcases her webbed hands as the series probes public attitudes toward persons with highly visible disabilities. In Walker's own words: "I really get to be me." Walker based Sabina on characters she knew existed in the 1920s and 1930s carnival sideshows with names like Lobster Girl or Lobster Boy. These were typically the best jobs persons with ectrodactyly could have, with most others being hidden away.

Walker furthered her acting career in 2006 by appearing as an inspirational woman with ectrodactyly on the fourth season premiere of Nip/Tuck. She and her children were also featured on an episode of TLC's My Unique Family.

She and former husband, NBC and HBO sportscaster, Jim Lampley jointly run Crystal Spring Productions, a film production company. She is also contributing writer for New Image magazine. Walker resides in Del Mar, California with her two children, both of whom also have ectrodactyly. Jim Lampley was her third husband. Her second husband, Robert Walker, from San Diego, California is an Independent media production professional active in radio, television, and film production. She had no children with her first husband.

Walker can be heard on KTLK AM1150 in Los Angeles on Saturdays from 2-4pm PT as a progressive talk show host. http://www.ktlk1150.com

Though, I did not know she was a progressive?!

Such a nice way to preserve the memory of Casey Sheehan and honor the work of his Mother and those who have fought so hard to end the tragedy in Iraq.

Thank you Bree Walker!

I think Ruppert Murdoch is even too rich and powerful for Ted. I just wish he'd take back CNN. He admits it was a mistake to sell it to AOL Time-Warner, but at the time couldn't foresee what right wing tools of the Bush administration that they would turn out to be.

47. The Camp Casey Story Just Made the International News!!!...
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 11:36 PM by dEMOK
...On the front page of UK's Guardian:

Anti-war 'Camp Casey' sold as peace site

Ed Pilkington in New York
Monday June 11, 2007

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq and a leading anti-war activist, has sold her five-acre protest site near George Bush's ranch in Crawford.

It has been bought for $87,000 (£44,000) by Bree Walker, a Los Angeles-based television host who has promised to keep the site as a peace memorial. "I'm cashing out my capitalist corporate stocks and buying into a legacy of peace," Walker said.

Her acquisition of the land prevents a purchase by the pro-war group Move America Forward, which had declared its intention to try to buy the plot and build its own monument to fallen Iraq heroes.<snip>
