U.S. military: 26 killed in Baghdad raid
Posted 50m ago

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. soldiers killed 26 people before dawn
Saturday during raids in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood.
The U.S. military said the dead were terrorists who had
attacked American troops, but Iraqi police and officials
said the victims were civilians.

The U.S. military said its troops were attacked with small
arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs but
there were no U.S. casualties.

The Iraqi officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity out
of security concerns, put the death toll at eight, with 20
wounded.

Seventeen suspected militants also were detained in the
operation, which consisted of two separate raids, the U.S.
military said in a statement.

U.S. assault in Baghdad kills 8 civilians, Iraqis say

Reuters, The Associated Press
Published: June 30, 2007

BAGHDAD: The U.S. military staged raids Saturday in Sadr City,
the largest Shiite neighborhood in the capital, and the police
and hospital officials said eight people were killed, all civilians.

The military said it killed 26 people, all terrorists who responded
to the raids with small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and
roadside bombs.

It was one of the bloodiest clashes in Sadr City, named after the
father of the Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr, since the U.S.-led
invasion of Iraq in 2003. The Iraqi officials, who spoke on condition
of anonymity out of security concerns, said 20 people had been
wounded.

According to Iraqi officials, the dead included three members of one
family: a father, mother and son.

BAGHDAD, June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on
Saturday that its forces had killed an Egyptian man
believed to be a senior member of al Qaeda in Iraq on
Friday.

The military said in a statement that intelligence reports
indicated that Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Masri worked directly
for fellow Egyptian Abu Ayyub al-Masri, leader of al Qaeda
in Iraq.

The U.S. military said Abu Abd al-Rahman was killed between
Baghdad and the Sunni city of Falluja, west of the capital.

It said he was "responsible for participating in terrorist
courts and issuing fatwas" and had fought U.S. forces in
both major battles for Falluja in 2004.

BAGHDAD, June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on
Saturday it had uncovered 35 to 40 bodies in a mass grave
south of Falluja, in Iraq's Sunni dominated Anbar province.

A Falluja hospital source said 35 bodies had been retrieved
and were being finger-printed to establish their identity.

The military said the killings were relatively recent and
the bodies had been bound and bore gunshot wounds.

The mass grave was found late on Friday near a place
called Ferris, roughly 35 km (22 miles) south of the city
of Falluja, after a tip-off from a local, it said.

3. U.S. raids Baghdad slum; 26 Iraqis die
American soldiers rolled into Baghdad's Sadr City slum on Saturday in search of Iranian-linked militants and as many as 26 Iraqis were killed in what a U.S. officer described as "an intense firefight."

But residents, police and hospital officials said eight people were killed — all civilians in their homes, and angrily accused U.S. forces of firing blindly on the innocent. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki condemned the raids and demanded an explanation for the assault into a district where he has barred U.S. operations in the past.

Separately, two American solders were charged with the premeditated murder of three Iraqis, the U.S. military said Saturday. And in Muqdadiyah, 60 miles north of the capital, police said a suicide bomber exploded himself in a crowd of police recruits, killing at least 16 people and wounding 24, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

The U.S. military said it conducted two pre-dawn raids in Sadr City, Baghdad's largest Shiite slum, killing 26 "terrorists" who attacked U.S. troops with small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs. But Iraqi police and hospital officials said all the dead were civilians killed in their homes.
