Sensitive Campaign Materials Taken in Tennessee's Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate's Office Burglary
16-Oct-02
Stolen Election 2002
"Sensitive campaign material was stolen from the headquarters of (Tennessee's) Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Bredesen during a break-in over the weekend, campaign officials said. Among the items missing from the Music Row office are a computer that includes confidential campaign strategy points and a laptop with donor lists and other financial information, said Dave Cooley, Bredesen's senior strategist. Bredesen said he thinks the burglar or burglars were after information and not the equipment. 'Those would have been the two computers I would have wanted to take,' Bredesen said, noting dozens of other computers were left untouched. 'Somebody knew what they were doing.' Desks that were left locked were found unlocked, computers were turned on, and things had been rifled, Lenker said. Police spokesman Don Aaron said there were no signs of forced entry. The office, located in a building at One Music Circle North, is secured with a card swipe system."

NEW YORK CITY, New York (AP) -- Three people were arrested Thursday in connection with the theft of several computers from the Democratic National Committee's regional finance office.
The arrests were made after an informant told police the suspects had allegedly purchased some of the stolen property, police said. They were identified as Angel Santiago, 42, of Queens; Carlos Rojas, 28, of Queens; and William Crespo, 26, of Brooklyn.
Police were still investigating whether the three were involved in the initial theft.
Three laptop computers and a handheld electronic organizer were stolen from the office on Sept. 13, District Attorney Richard A. Brown said. Law enforcement officials said the computers did not contain any "sensitive" material. DNC officials did not immediately return telephone calls for comment.

Just 24 hours after Rep. Diaz won re-election with 81% of the vote against her opponent Laura Perez, someone broke into her campaign headquarters in the middle of the night and stole my laptop. This laptop included most of the important things in my life: from family photos to law school assignments to career information to political campaign information. If YOU have any information on where this computer is, please email me here and no questions will be asked. Also, if you can, please click here to donate to this blog so that I can purchase a new laptop. I am looking to raise $900.
I am frustrated beyond belief.
This incident comes on the heels of one of the most nasty election cycles in Providence history. There were the usual threats and intimidation, but there was even more: drenching cars in gasoline; breaking into campaign headquarters; physical assaults and massive campaign sign thefts. The campaign that I was involved in - that of Rep. Grace Diaz - had 200 of our campaign signs stolen in the middle of the night. Of course, challenger Laura Perez claimed she had nothing to do with it.
In the midst of all of these events stood one radio talk show host: Reynaldo Almonte, who hosts a spanish-language morning show on 88.1FM and who stoked the fires of animosity and hatred daily. Almonte is similar to a right-wing radio talk show host like Dan Yorke or Rush Limbaugh with one major exception: he has no problem spreading lies and misinformation to satisfy personal vendettas. Yorke is often correct in his critiques and at least he gives you a shot to tell your side of the story. Almonte simply picks a target and unloads whatever is at his disposal or available in his imagination.
I vehemently believe in democracy and its need for competition to be successful. But, when this competition turns violent and predatory, something is very wrong. Like I said, I am frustrated beyond belief.

By ROBIN ERB
BLADE STAFF WRITER
Thieves shattered a side window overnight at Lucas County Democratic headquarters in Toledo, stealing computers with sensitive campaign information and triggering concern of the local party's ability to deliver crucial votes on Nov. 2.
Among the data on the stolen computer of the party's office manager were: e-mails discussing campaign strategy, candidates' schedules, financial information, and phone numbers of party members, candidates, donors, and volunteers.
Also taken were computers belonging to Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak and to a Texas attorney working with the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign to ensure election security.
...
At Democratic headquarters, officials stopped short of publicly blaming partisan politics, but at the same time, they all but ruled out run-of-the-mill criminals.
Two other computers, holding less sensitive information, were untouched, as were a petty cash box that usually holds $80 to $100, televisions, portable radios, and other electronics. Moreover, other offices inside the building, 1817 Madison Ave., were not entered. Files, papers, and pamphlets remained in neat piles, and campaign signs leaned, apparently undisturbed, against a wall.
"They knew what they wanted," Mr. Chabler said, calling the incident a 'third-rate burglary,' " a not-so-subtle reference to the break-in at National Democratic Committee offices in 1972 that began the Watergate scandal that eventually led to the President Nixon's resignation.

by: Joe Bodell
Sun Mar 18, 2007 at 4:56:39 PM
A laptop computer was stolen Saturday night or early Sunday morning from the office of the Minnesota DFL's interim communications director, Nick Kimball.
The intruder smashed an exterior window and made off with the computer in lieu of other valuable electronics, including a video camera and a high-end digital camera. No other computers were taken, and at present it appears Kimball's laptop was the sole target of the robbery.
According to Kimball, it was an odd coincidence that the burglary occurred so soon after his transfer into the role of interim communications director and may have allowed the perpetrator to take advantage of the transition. However, Kimball emphasized that he knew of no one "with any legitimacy that would do something like this," and thus could not say whether he thought the robbery was a politically motivated crime. Although the stolen laptop's hard drive contains contact lists and information the DFL would prefer to maintain internally, Kimball said that the party's most sensitive information is stored on an unaffected internal server, and the security protocols in place on the laptop should prevent access to truly sensitive party information.
A police report was filed on the scene, and police officials indicated that an investigation of the incident is under way. Stay with Minnesota Monitor for coverage of this breaking story.

Talk about Déjà vu! Burglars broke into the N.H. Democratic Headquarters. Many times, the like minded antics of the Bush administration has been compared to that of the uber-secret one of Nixon. The comparison of the war in Vietnam and the one in Iraq has been made many times. I wonder what would Nixon think about this if he were around today. A President that actually makes Tricky Dick look like a boy scout. With all the likeness that the two have in common, there was one thing missing, until now. There have been many data thefts in the last six years, but this one is directly related to the Democratic Party.
This time, it was not Watergate, but the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s headquarters. While they don’t want to be specific as to what may have been taken, they do admit to some things being missing. While it is not yet know if it was politically motivated, the burglary does bring back memories of an administration very much like the present one, that was hell bent on secrecy and far reaching powers.
<snip>
Office workers reported the break-in to police on Monday. Concord Police Sgt. Mike McGuire said some items were taken, but he declined to be more specific. The assessment was the same from Kathy Sullivan, the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party.
“Some things were taken, but I don’t really want to get into that right now,” Sullivan said on Tuesday.
