Poll: Iranians want democracy, nuclear inspections
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Most Iranians support nuclear inspections, a democratic government and normal relations with the United States, a poll by a U.S.-based organization has found.

Terror Free Tomorrow found 80 percent of Iranians support full inspections and a guarantee not to develop nuclear weapons in return for aid from other countries.

Slightly more than half, however, said they still favor the development of nuclear weapons and think the country would be safer with them. Developing the weapons is considered a "very important" priority for just 29 percent of those polled.

But when presented with an option to give up nuclear weapons development in return for outside aid, only 17 percent still supported nuclear weapons development.

3. Regine change from within
I read this article on the (for lack of a better term) lightening up of Iranian culture and how they're leaving behind some of the rigors of traditionalist Islamic life for a more westernized version of Iranian life since the revolution. This is further evidence of my theory (I'm sure that I didn't invent it) that the best way to normalize relations with a country is to make them your buddy and partner in every way possible. Engaging them economically, socially, and culturally will show people how great it is to govern yourself and to be free. Note I left out engaging them militarily which is the Bush plan. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban might hate freedom, but if their people don't want to subscribe to that view because they're busy hanging out in cafes then where is terrorist support going to come from?

7. You know, they HAD democracy, we helped destroy it...
In addition Iran has one of the YOUNGEST populations in the world, and throughout the 1990s the government was moderating and talking about democratic reforms because of pressure from student protests. It wasn't until GWB proclaimed Iran as a member of the "Axis of Evil" and started sabre rattling against them that the government radicalized again.
