Merkley to form fund-raising committee for Ore. Senate race

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley appears ready to join the race to unseat US Senator Gordon Smith.

Two sources tell The Associated Press that the Portland Democrat plans to file notice that he will run with the Federal Election Commission by August first.

A strategist advising Merkley told The AP that Merkley is vacationing with his family in Central Oregon and wants to consult with them one last time before making a final decision.

Smith is a Republican seeking a third 6-year term in the Senate.

1. Gordon Smith is the Bush enabler who awakened to a new-found

opposition to the war in Iraq only after last November's elections. Some laud him for his "courageous" stances against Bush, but he votes with the administration 90% of the time and seems only to oppose the administration in votes where his vote won't change the outcome anyway. We need to get this guy out of the US Senate.

I'm going to a fundraising barbecue for Steve Novick, another Democrat who entered the race last March, on Sunday. We'll see how the Dem race shakes out.
