Romney: Americans angry with Iraq war
By AMY LORENTZEN, Associated Press Writer

ADEL, Iowa - Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Friday that the country is angry over the lack of progress in the Iraq war, a stinging assessment of the Bush administration's handling of the conflict from a Republican candidate.

Campaigning in Iowa, the former Massachusetts governor also argued that despite the nation's frustration over the war, voters aren't ready to replace President Bush with a Democrat.

"I know the Democrats are getting all ready, they are measuring the drapes and getting the carpet all ready for how they are going to take over the White House, and I think they are going to get a big surprise," Romney told a crowd gathered at a golf course. "America is not happy with how the war in Iraq is going, and is angry. But America is not about to take a sharp left turn and put somebody in the White House who would turn America into a European-type state."

While Romney supported the March 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and backs Bush's current troop increase, he has repeatedly said the post-invasion period was "mismanaged" with a lack of preparation for the insurgency and adequate planning for a government handover.

1. The last time the Repubbies started talking about measuring drapes..
they got their asses kicked. I keep hearing the same tired worn out old talking points out of Mittsy, it's like they took Bush's old campaign speeches and changed a few words here and there...:eyes:

10. Also used against Pelosi
and is a reminder that Ms. Clinton has an innie instead of an outie and is part of the marching orders to 'feminize' the Democratic Party.

5. If only
we were even going to get to vote for somebody who would "turn America into a European-type state". We don't even get that choice. All we will get is the left wing of the corporate war party vs the right wing of the corporate war party. We will not get a choice for universal single payer healthcare. We will not get a choice for public education through university level. We will not get a choice for a reinvigorated public national mass transit system. We will not get a choice for a drastcially reduced foreign military presence. We will not get a choice for a sane and tolerant drugs policy. We will not get a choice for cradle to grave economic security for all citizens. We probably will not get a choice for a real effort to address on a national and international basis the twin problems of catastrophic climate change and peak oil.

I'll vote in the primaries for Dennis Kucinich, who at least supports positions that are really left of center, but I'll get to vote in november for yet another corporate creep, one of the two choices imposed on us in our pathetic charade of representative democracy, and our republic, and our nation, will continue pretty much along the same downward spiral it is currently on.

If only.

6. Why Would We Want To Be Like Europe?
Just because they have universal healthcare, a superior overall educational system, a higher quality of life, a longer life expectancy than ours, and their currency is worth almost twice as much as ours, there's no reason whatsoever to emulate them in any way.

:sarcasm:

Unbelievable. We are a primitive nation compared to Europe.

27. The horror of it!
This would mean that people could actually retire in dignity before they die of overwork; that seniors wouldn't have to choose between medicine and food; that we would actually care for our citizens, rather than cater to big corporations. Children could visit doctors before their condition required a trip to the emergency room. Republics want to spare us all of that!

Wait...so, what's the downside of a European type system? I only wish that we could elect a president, and a party, who would institute these changes.

30. He thinks we're only pissed about this incredibly stupid war?
The leading causes of bankruptcy are loss of a job, divorce and medical bills. We were the richest country in the world, and yet our media clobbers Moore for suggesting that Cuba, one of the poorer countries, has health care better than ours. We're rich. They're poor. But neener-neener, we're number 37 and they're 39. Of course, they don't dump patients from hospitals onto the sidewalk like we do. I am so thankful that Republics want to spare us the horror of having a government that works for us instead of exploiting us. Stay the course!

18. Europeans Would Respond But They're Too Busy
They're too busy traveling here, buying our goods, and generally enjoying their life and the fact that everything in America is 50% off because their currencies are almost twice the value of ours.

But, we have NASCAR.

17. I don't like Republicans, but I think Romney is the worst of them all
Romney is a smug, arrogant, self-righteous SOB that I cannot stand, :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I guess I dispise Sam Brownback more, but he has zero chance..Flip Romney does stand more of a chance so he concerns me more...

I think I can honestly say there has never been a politican more I've disliked than Mitt Romney...He has zero redeeming qualities...Oh I forgot, Bill "pumpkinhead" O'Reilly said "Romney looks presidental"....George Clooney looks presidental to, since when does that qualify one to be president....F-ing bozo O'Reilly!...

22. Nowhere near as 'pretty' as John Edwards
who, as the pubbys like to tell everyone, spares no expense for his haircuts! Romney is a schmuck and ever since I heard the dog story, a stinking criminal (like most the GOP). I think he's fooling himself thinking that America is not sick of the entire freaking Republican party at this point. I had to laugh the other day when Christine Kraft on Talk City (left radio out here in Sacramento) said we should still worry about Jeb Bush. I think just the sound of that name is enough to make voters hit the Dem button. I think Jebbie can fuggedaboutit!!

Welcome to DU, by the way! :hi:

Since the advent of the television.

It sucks, but that's the reality. It's why Dennis K has no chance.

28. Hey, Mitt
We are angry about much, much more than the debacle in Iraq. We are angry about the ever-widening gap between the wealthy, and the rest of us. We are angry that our jobs are being shipped overseas, and that our corporations are recruiting foreign workers to work for less money, then having the people who are losing their jobs train their replacements.

We are angry at the out-of-control cost of health care, the loss of our civil liberties, and the greed and corruption of the Republic party. We are angry that children are only cherished until they are born, then abandoned and forgotten by the holier-than-thou right wing nuts who vote against having our country provide them with insurance.

We are angry that same-sex couples, who will live together in committed relationships regardless, are only allowed to pay taxes, but not allowed the same benefits of heterosexual married partners. This is none of the governement's business.

We are angry that more and more Americans, rather than being able to retire after a life of work, will not have the dubious American privilege of working til they drop dead, and this is due in large to Republic policies. Yes, Mitt, we're angry, and the war and occupation of Iraq is part of it, but by no means all. We are ready for a progressive president who will place citizens, regardless of their race, sexual orientation, or wealth, over cronies, and big corporations.

Then again, explaining all of this probably wouldn't phase a man who was willing to mistreat his own dog. Dogs, ordinary Americans, it's all the same to the Republic party.

The current occupant used to address the peasants from the safely of a military base. Having another GOP cheerleader and looter speaking from golf courses will be such a pleasant change. I'm sure we won't be angry then.
