Liberals Going After Fox Advertisers
Source: Associated Press via CNBC

NEW YORK (AP) - Liberal activists are stepping up their campaign against Fox News Channel by pressuring advertisers not to patronize the network.

MoveOn.org, the Campaign for America's Future and liberal blogs like DailyKos.com are asking thousands of supporters to monitor who is advertising on the network. Once a database is gathered, an organized phone-calling campaign will begin, said Jim Gilliam, vice president of media strategy for Brave New Films, a company that has made anti-Fox videos.

Subject: Advertising On O'Reilly/Fox
Date: Jul 25, 2007 10:25 AM

Hello Gabriella

I am shocked that a company with your steller reputation would be involved with
such a hateful ideologue. O'Reilly has made his reputation as someone who doesn't
care about the truth and is willing to smear those with whom he disagrees by calling
them "Nazis" among other slurs. In Germany, the home of the BMW marque,
this sort of name-calling would generate opprobrium and widespread condemnation,
as it rightly should.

How can you, and all those at BMW/USA who decide where to allocate your advertising
resources, allow your prestigious stature to be associated with such a malicious
monster? Please examine this sorry situation quickly so that the necessary changes
are implemented ASAP.

Thank you for sharing my concern with your colleagues.

Best Wishes

121. FYI: Check out BMW's sordid history in the 1930's and 40's and
their support of the Nazis at Fox won't be so surprising:

"The image above comes from the affidavit of Karl Sommer. Sommer was an SS officer working in the Economic and Administrative Main Office (EAMO) in 1942, becoming its departmental head in 1944. EAMO was responsible for giving companies access to prisoners for slave labor (kind of a fore-runner of modern temp agencies).

After the war, Sommer was interviewed by the US Chief of Counsel on his activities under the Nazi regime, and specifically, about which companies used Nazi slave labor. Sommer said that the firms, after filling the necessary prerequisites, were allowed to come in to the camps and choose the prisoners they wanted. Even after seeing the horrible conditions in these camps, seeing the death, starvation, torture... these firms chose to take some of these people and exploit them for profit.

The first such firm named on Sommer's list is BMW, which makes 4 further appearances on the list. Altogether, BMW admits to using to using 25,000 - 30,000 slave laborers, POWs and concentration camp inmates. If they were payed, their meager earnings (20 cents an hour) went into the SS treasury to further fund their own annihilation (information from The Ethnic Newswatch 03.31.98). Other firms listed by Sommer include Ford, Volkswagen, Krupp, Siemens, Bayer, Porsche and Daimler-Benz (Mercedes)."

133. Ford of Europe, sure. What about GM?
Opel is the GM subsidiary in Germany, and they fed the Nazi war machine. Did they use Jews as slave labor too?

Also, I didn't think the Porsche company made cars until the 1950s. Dr. Porsche was making Volkswagens, I believe.

So far, I am boycotting:

Bickfords restaurants, in Brockton, Mass.

Fresh Catch, West Bridgewater, Mass.

And on-notice, with ONE more chance before I stop going there forever:

Halfway Cafe, Holbrook, Mass.

Why does a SPORTS Bar need to show Fox Noise?

16. I do.
Top brass has a way of finding out about boycotts almost immediately because the ad buy decisions come from the top, not the mailroom. And these firms are free to choose many other advertising vehicles in the marketplace to hawk their products so that their flow of sales isn't interrupted, and the rank and file doesn't get hurt.

First off, to the topic, cool. Good idea, and does some one keep a link to a list of those advertisers?

But my actual question is to your message title, King Coal. Are there more liberal literates than conservative? What's the source?

I ask because it goes against my personal experience. My husband is quite conservative, but he and his friends are, I confess, highly literate. I disagree with their politics, but still like most of his friends because they're quite interesting. On the other hand, that's a small sample. So I'm curious as to any broader data.

23. Economic resistance is the best politics. Just don't tell Hillary.
Economic resistance to the right wing business agenda is a good idea. It's simple: spend your money where it won't be used against you. Instead, support businesses that want and work toward sustaining the same world you do.

But bear in mind that Hillary has benefited directly from FOX News, Murdoch having already infamously held a fund-raising dinner for her. She's gladly taken the tainted money, which she'll have to repay with obedience later.

So, please, no pretending that anyone can back a right wing politician like Hill *and* punish a right wing network's advertisers. That's just the sort of silly trap into which triangulating centrists often blindly stumble.

Edited on Fri Jul-27-07 04:22 PM by harun
vs. Liberal. It is about Truth vs. Lies. Misleading people vs. informing them. Cheerleading vs reporting.

Conservatives want to have a channel that does nothing but talk about how awesome greed is, so be it. But consistently distort the truth and lie about it (and lie about those opposed to it) and I am going to boycott your sponsors.

128. A little dash of reality - I canceled my sub to the LA Times when
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 02:42 PM by coalition_unwilling
they canned Robert Scheer. I then became the subject (or object?) of a massive mail andtelemarketing campaign trying to win me back as a subscriber. No matter how many times I told their telemarketers why I had cancelled and my conditions for returning (rehiring Bob Scheer and firing the dickwad from Tribune Corp brought in to fire him), nothing ever happened. In other words, withholding economic support from fascist groups can only do so much.

Well, revenge is a dish best served cold, I must say. LA Times paid circulation continues to plummnet, even though their coverage of BFEE has markedly improved since they fired Scheer. But I don't really read them much anymore, as they pimped for the war almost as much as the NYTimes and the Washington Post in the days leading up to the invasion\occupation.

39. Anyone else bothered by this part of the story?
The groups seem particularly angry at Fox's Bill O'Reilly, who has done critical reports on left-wing bloggers. On July 16, O'Reilly said the DailyKos.com Web site is "hate of the worst order," and sent a reporter to question JetBlue Airways Corp. CEO Dave Barger about the airline's sponsorship of a gathering run by DailyKos.

<SNIP>

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but it makes it sound too much like O'Reilly is taking a legitimate position, as opposed to what he's really doing -- engaging in a vendetta on behalf of his right wing masters.

Also, I told the rep. that I have a Home Depot and a Lowe's about equal distance from my house (true), and I will choose Lowe's every time.

66. Raising awareness
They know not what they do. Or what their paid media services are doing for that matter. If they do know, knowing that we and more and more people will know would make things more interesting.

This should have been done long ago and still needs to be broadened.

For example, the scoundrels within the rascally media itself are getting away with things even the editors have not bothered to be aware of. For example, should not all papers be made much more aware of the pointed spin and bias(some of it very much indicating deceitful, planned agendas) of the news services they employ in their lazy outsourcing of clip and bit news? AP and other news wires that routinely edit, reword and characterize shallow treatments(too brief to source properly which is convenient, too brief to be considered punditry even with a byline). Think tanks and the anecdotal examples(often completely false) and the spokespersons without real credentials and much less non-partisan credibility. A lot of footwork has been done by individuals critiquing and exploiting what the critical eye and humble research EASILY uncovers.

The news reporters and the editors, if they do come looking, shrug off the discovery they did not make themselves, of the horrible fact of betraying news by lazily trusting, taking for granted, their outsourcing of the profession. Naturally the shock is greater and the inoculation against being first threatened with the shock that they have been duped and not doing their job if it is an advertiser. Most advertisers below the exalted circles of renegade conspirators aspiring for dominance would find it easier to get over the shock. Not their fault. Not their foolishness. Simply betrayal and recognition they are paying to dig their own graves(unless they know that commercials are to a large extent graft supplied to the corporate media control mechanism).

Newspapers and locals show some condescending sympathy or something less as they shrug off the individual caller. They are used to cranks and angry consumers threatening to tune out and cancel. Much of the measured sympathy and time you get you suspect may just be because of that. To be fair you get an LTTE. So do liars and jerks who apply pressure. What all theses people who buy into the propaganda beast must get is the same massive treatment and wakeup call. When THEY get mad or retreat or simply aware of the reality a lot more is accomplished. Otherwise being absorbed into the lazy sponge, the "wisdom" of a news environment that fancies itself competent and fair aims mostly for the tragic pattern of the good prophet. A hero for posterity, a losing voice for change in the present.

Then of course all those officials and functionaries, all those local political groups and every unit of society can also be made more critically aware that assumptions and trust misplaced may be the reason for a huge amount of our troubles and why societal illusions come crashing down suddenly when the wall of reality(or a Michael Moore documentary) suddenly smacks into your media dazzled eyes.

In the commons this is spreading and the realization all the more easier to win, but because of the media beast controlling access to swift contact with the masses we need not be patient with small person to person measures finally overcoming the huge problem. Petitioning the media and their sponsors and decreasing viewership of the public forum squatters and deceivers is also not enough. A public rivalry to corporate news must rival and supersede its crippled, perhaps untenable stewardship over public interest news. Where that leads is public necessity and their problem, for once, instead of ours.

80. It's about damn time. FINALLY the left catches up to the right
on the issue of boycotts and protests against RW enablers! The right have been successful at this for so long because THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES ORGANIZING BOYCOTTS! Look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks; the Freepers organized and had their music taken off of nearly every country station in the US for a time-just because Natalie Maines said that she's ashamed that Bush was from Texas. We have not organized to take down anyone no matter how horrible their statements because half of DU would say "it's an issue of freedom of speech-O'Lielly can say whatever he likes" while others would say "a boycott changes nothing-let's focus on the 2008 election"! Meanwhile the right fights their battles on every front while we've haggled over which battles are worth fighting. Like Will Rogers said "I don't belong to an organized political party; I'm a Democrat". Until we do get organized and on the same page, and until we do cease to "pick and choose" our battles, "keeping our powder dry" and instead leap into the fray at every opportunity to gain every bit of ground possible, nothing will ever change. I hope that everyone here gets on board once the MoveOn list is compiled!

No truth has ever been spoken at Fox... 92. HOLD IT.
FOX IS OWNED BY ITS ADVERTISERS. It is merely their p.r. subsidiary. My concern is that, by writing its owners, all you're doing is telling them that their attempted mind manipulation has been a bit too obvious.

This is treating the symptom, not the disease. The disease is the rampant consolidation of ownership of the media in corporate hands. The cure is the intellectual equivalent of anti-trust laws: restrictions prohibiting any one person, entity or conglomerate from directly or indirectly owning a majority of media in any given market.

Without those reforms, writing the advertisers is a temporary fix at best.

94. A very unorthodox supposition...

That Fox Network is a subsidiary of those companies who ladle advertising dollars into Fox's coffers. How this radical perspective relates to the effort to dissuade those who do use the Fox Network to disseminate their promotional propaganda is too deep for me,

"Temporary fixes", along with the educational possibilities inherent in actions like this are positive developments in my estimation. Far better than waiting for more balanced media ownership or the resurrection of the "fairness doctrine".

Don't be sidetracked from participating in this by those who would prefer that we sit on our hands waiting for a "pie in the sky".

Please get the list from the links above and do something to make a difference. Please!

108. faux is the worst and you have to start somewhere...
if we would all *really* stick to this and get the word out, i'm sure the other stations would notice. could you imagine hundreds of thousands of letter from people to each of the advertisers? and, for every one letter they get, they realize there are many more people who feel the same (something like 10x) yet don't write.

not other stations would change, but they might if faux takes a big hit.

Am I mistaken, or is not Fox News Channel a cable and satellite channel? You know, the kind that you pay to watch. If you don't like what you see, stop watching it.

106. A former coworker of mine (who just happens to be a DUer)
raised hell after the company started broadcasting Fox Noise in the cafeteria during lunch.

It worked. :)

this is good news.

131. A boss at a job I used to work at put up a "United We Stand" poster.
I waited until everyone had left one night and covered over the "We Stand" with "My Ass!" so that it read "United My Ass!" Poster came down the next day and never went back up. I still giggle when I think about it :)

107. But that's not what they're doing!!

This is a spin to make it look like liberals are attacking conservatives. Bill O'Reilly and his far-right friends pressured JetBlue into dropping their sponsorship of Daily Kos by picking anonymous comments off the site and saying they represent the whole community's mind-set, so liberals are (somewhat ineptly) trying to make the point that you could do the same with commenters on BO's site, etc.

argh.

132. Not Moore's decicison to make. Film is distributed by the Weinstein
Company, I believe, and their corporate office probably contracts with an ad agency to do media buys.

109. I'm not sure if this makes sense...
Don't get me wrong - I know their heart is in the right place and I hate FNC just as much as the next liberal.

However, we are talking economics here. The worst this campaign will do is free up some advertising space on FNC, which at worst will lower their price per spot. The cheaper prices will then increase demand for FNC's advertising time product and we are back to square one.

It seems fun, but as long as FNC has viewers, this is a never ending uphill battle of economic forces.

The ONLY way to destroy FNC is to lower it's viewer numbers. Not sure how to do that (that's their competition's job).

Anyway, I'm sure it'll keep the blogosphere entertained while the campaign goes on.

120. Very true.
It's the Fox entertainment division that props up their news.

Unfortunately they have hit shows that pull in viewers who stick around for their "news".

Try boycotting the entertainment division and the cookie will crumble.

115. Something interesting from the article
MoveOn.org, the Campaign for America's Future and liberal blogs like DailyKos.com are asking thousands of supporters to monitor ......

They want their supporters to watch programs they feel 'brainwash' people.not
What if these thousands of supporters that monitor the 'kool aid' have a falling out with the blogger and organizations?

Seems like viewership ratings will increase, no?

135. I don't know about this, friends.
I don't like the idea of trying to "shut up" and censor those whose speech we don't like. I'd rather have an open forum of ideas and win the battle of ideas.

The way to marginalize O'Reilly and Hannity is to win the battle of ideas against them, not to silence them.

Have we forgotten what true liberalism is?

is free speech. You got a problem with that?

Thanks for stopping by and telling us what liberalism is all about.

That's what they always say. If people put out a product that is faulty, then the consumer will rise up and demand it be fixed. Well we're rising up, finally. Thank you for your "concern".
